, Before 28 / SEPTEMBER.OCTOBER.2014 RINKMAGAZINE.COM T he Edge Ice Arena in Littleton, Colo., is an 80,000-square-foot facility that houses two NHL-size sheets of ice with eight locker rooms and a large lobby area. These areas require roughly 16,000 square feet of protective rubber flooring to handle skate traffic. The original rubber was installed when the building was constructed in 2003. We knew that the time was coming to replace the flooring, so we called on Becker Arena Products to start looking at some options. Fortunately, we had planned for a timely replacement through our capital improvements. There were some major challenges, as at least one sheet and four locker rooms needed to remain operational during the removal of the old product and the installation of the new. We worked with Steve Carlson and Chad Minichillo to discuss flooring options for the renovation. After much discussion, we settled on glued-down mats for the dressing rooms and connecting bathrooms and interlocking mats for the lobby areas and rink perimeter. Foothills Park and Recreation utilized the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) to procure the new flooring.
