38 / JANUARY.FEBRUARY.2016 RINKMAGAZINE.COM I often field questions regarding edging, specifically in tight radius corners. It is one piece of ice maintenance that is commonly overlooked or done incorrectly and, as a result, it's not uncommon to see the corners of the ice rink with thick ice. The best practice to keep your corners at the proper ice thickness is to edge daily and finish each edging process using the ice resurfacer. On occasion, you may need to "feather" the corner down using the edger. The "feathering" technique allows you to bring your corner down gradually while ultimately controlling the ice thickness. Step 1: Be sure to circle check both the edger and the ice resurfacer. Inspect the kick plate for protruding screws and uneven gaps or alignment. Step 2: Scan the ice surface visually and focus on the corners. Follow the kick plate and look for the rise and fall of the corner. In the photo above, the rise would begin at the Tim Horton's ad and fall at the SW ad.
