HIP-HOP / RNB 37 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 47 / 2013 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: CHIEF KEEF Kanye West has remixed his song, and he has even got his own Beats by Dr. Dre headphone line called Beats by Keef.. now what's with all the hype? The young Chicago native has already been signed to Interscope Records, collaborated with Kanye West; 50 Cent; Waka Flocka Flame, has threatened to slap Lupe Fiasco and has Drake claiming that he loves his music. So what is it about this rapper that has attracted so much attention? Well, he has a very distinctive rap style, typically rapping in a monotone over hood beats produced mainly by friend Young Chop. His biggest tracks to date are Bang, I Don't Like (which, if you've been listening to radio at all this year you will have heard) and Love Sosa. I Don't Like has been remixed by Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music and Rick Ross also laid down a verse over it. If you haven't already check out his mixtape 'Back From the Dead', book tickets for his show at IndigO2 and check out his debut album 'Finally Rich'. ALBUM OF THE MONTH BORN SINNER GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: KENDRICK LAMAR Born Kendrick Lamar Duckworth on June 17 in 1987, this 'kid from the 80s' has been making shockwaves in the world of hip-hop. Hailing from Compton, Calif., the writings were on the wall for a young Kendrick when at 8 years old, he witnessed his idols, the late (and still great) Tupac and Dr.Dre filming the music video for California Love. At age 16 he released his first mixtape Youngest Head Nigga In Charge, under the stage name K-Dot. The mixtape brought him to the attention of his current label Top Dawg Entertainment. Two years later he released a twentysix track mixtape entitled Training Day. But Lamar really gained attention when a video surfaced of an impromptu battle with cousin of MC Lyte, Charles Hamilton. Rapping over Miilkbone's "Keep It Real", Kendrick's verse would feature on a track entitled "West Coast Wu Tang". From 2006-2007 Kenrdick toured with The Game and featured on the tracks Cali Niggaz and The Cypha. After Lil Wayne consigned him, Lamar released his third mixtape C4, which was centred around Tha Carter III LP. Soon after, Kendrick dropped his stage name and decided to go by his real name, which led to his releasing his self entitle album, the Kendrick Lamar LP in late 2009. In February this year, a song was leaked entitled Cartoon & Cereal. Kendrick later admitted that it was from his debut studio album and was planning to shoot a video for it. In May it was announced that Kendrick Lamar and J Cole would be releasing a collaborative album together. Kendrick Lamar Good Kid, m.A.A.d city is out now.
