HOUSE / TECHNO 34 6 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 47 / 2013 IEW RV TE IN QUENUM Having co founded Access 58 with Paulo Nascimento, Cadenza with Luciano and Num records in Geneva. This guy has been busy making a lot of records, with the first release on Cadenza 'Orange Mistake' being to date one of the most successful tracks in techno we look forward to a new album dropping on Resolute this year. JOE LE GROOVE | guestlist.net You have released an vast array of music in your career, where did your musical journey start? It started at home with my family because my father listened to all the soul classics, african and caribbean music. He was crazy about music, he bought records and played music all day long, more than I do! Then when I was 17, I was a boarder in a school outside Paris but I used to skip school a lot to go to a club where my cousin worked, the legendary Palace. I remember watching the DJ, I was so impressed and that's when I knew I wanted to do THAT! As well as Access 58, Num and most recently Clapper you co founded Cadenza with Luciano in 2003 with the first release being Orange Mistake which was one of the most successful techno tracks of the last millenium, where did you and Luciano get the inspiration from when you both wrote that monster? For me, the inspiration and the work is always the same, for every track. I put my everything into but I don't know if it's going to be a huge success or not, that comes after. Actually Luciano and I started Cadenza together because we had a few people listen to it and they were not interested in releasing it, so we decided to do our own label so we could release it! If had to invent a new electronic music genre, what would you call it? Wow that's a good question! and I don't have an answer... sorry. You have been working on your album for a while now, when do you think it will be finished? It's finished, I did it just before the end of the year. So now I'm in touch with a few labels to see where it's going to go, I hope it comes out fast. Times have changed for producers with ever evolving technology, what is your favourite piece of new school technology? Live Ableton - it's changed the way I do music. I can work on my ideas really quickly. Then when I'm done I work on refining the sound with Logic. So yeah, Ableton for the ideas and Logic for the sound. What's your favourite piece of old school kit? The Korg Polysix. If you could change one thing in the music industry what would it be? What I feel sad about the music industry today is that it promotes image rather than product. There's a lot of attention on how artists look, their image etc... but not enough importance on what music they really do. Electronic music is using the same type of marketing as pop music. So if I could change one thing, I would put more attention on music, I would put music first. I hear you have a forthcoming EP on Resolute Label NYC, can you tell us a bit more about that and any other future releases? First, I want to give a big up to Nektarios and Elon! They do an amazing job with Resolute. So I'm really happy to have an EP on Resolute, I'm so proud to be part of that. I'm working on it and I hope to finish it by mid-February. About future releases, I have some remix EPs coming out, but really my main focus is my album, which should come out this year. So the Mayans were wrong and its not the end of the world, where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? I don't know, because i'm not so comfortable putting myself in the future that way. I just hope to be in good health, have lots of energy so I can continue doing the work I love to do, and spending time with my family and friends - because I love music, but it's not the only thing in my life. I'm crazy about food and exercise and I love traveling and meeting new people. If you were banished to a desert island and you had to take 3 famous people with you dead or alive , who would you take and why? I think it would be crazy fun to have Ozzy Osbourne, but I can't really think of anybody else, so in reality I think I would rather take my wife and our two kids, they're not so famous, but they are for me.
