REGGAE / 48 DANCE HALL ALBUM OF THE MONTH ONE LOVE, ONE LIFE Issue 47 / 2013 GENERAL ROOTS NEW ALBUM THE FIRST ATTACK One Love, One Life, the new album from legendary reggae singer Beres Hammond, has topped the U.S. Billboard Charts after being in the Top 5 for almost 6 weeks. The success comes after his December 12 Barclays Arena performance in Brooklyn, and his December 14 performance at the Hard Rock Cafe in Ft. Lauderdale. One Love One Life is also doing well on this side of the pond, reaching number 4 last week in the Top 100 Reggae Artist Album Charts. Considering this is Hammond's first studio album since 2008's One Moment In Time, the success of One Love One Life is impressive. Beres coproduced 19 of the 20 tracks on the new album, which is a double disc release. Disc one, One Love, features Beres classic lover's rock sound on tracks such as "In My Arms", "No Candle Light" and "Keep Me Warm" while disc two One Life is filled with the kind of sociallyconscious, spiritually empowering music which has become synonymous with Beres Hammond over the course of his career. This is especially evident on the standout tracks, "You Stand Alone", "Truth Will Live On" and "Prime Time". Listen Hard and Listen Good Because General Roots is Coming for You. 'The First Attack', the debut EP from North London's six pieced reggae band, General Roots. 'The First Attack' fires its first banger 'Generals in the Ghetto' at you, infusing dark dub rhythms and feel good dancehall beats so the track's lyrics become true and all you want to do is keep on skanking. General Roots have already been making a name for themselves since they formed in 2008, having had a busy year on the live festival circuit in 2012 playing at Outlook (Croatia), Boomtown Fair (U.K) and Secret Garden Party (U.K). The band have a mission to bring back the classic sounds and feel coming out of Jamaica in the 70s and 80s and they do this with great success adding that oh so welcome dub twist to the silky smooth vocals of The Minister and Field Marshall Fred. 'The First Attack' recalls the sounds of Lover's Rock legends like Sugar Minott and Dennis Brown but the watery bass lines give the album that contemporary edge shared by bands Easy Star All Stars and Fat Freddy's Drop. The only disappoint with this EP is the shortage of tracks. 'The First Attack' is a great debut from these truly talented musicians. Check out or follow @GeneralRoots.
