f r o m p u b l i s h e r a l a n ON THE COVER Photographer Tom Campbell caught a rare moment early last season, with all four freshmen on the bench at the same time. Yet, much of the focus on 2013-14 will be how much (from left) Jay Simpson, A.J. Hammons, Ronnie Johnson and Rapheal Davis improve as the Boilermakers try to move from a below-.500 season and return to Big Ten prominence. There are lots of inspiring stories inside about the Johnson brothers, Courtney Moses, Whitney Bays, A.J. Hammons; the list goes on. Yet, something from Tom Campbell's image on the first day of practice (show lower right) struck me. When you look at all the players lined up from behind, it is a collection of nameless, faceless guys awaiting instruction of what to do next. At the moment, there are no worries on whether last year's men's freshmen class will come of age this year, or if the Boilermakers infusion of a couple of fifth-year senior newcomers will help this team return to the NCAA Tournament. At that moment, it's about the next drill. And that is precisely the tact that both of Purdue's basketball teams have to take when looking ahead to 2013-14. There is no getting ahead of oneself here. Both the men's and women's programs are fortunate to be led by coaches who believe in the mentality of let's take care of business on the practice court before we head to the arena. Sharon Versyp and Matt Painter are as old school as it gets when it comes to living and breathing that notion. They are also old school when it comes to preseason rankings. It seems that Painter relishes the role of having a team that is picked to finish in the lower half of the Big Ten, when he knows there is talent to do more, much more. Versyp's team is expected to finish in the upper division of the league, but with the loss of Taylor Manuel in the offseason, the Boilermakers' unproven inside game is expected to limit the team's chances of winning their first regular-season league crown since 2002. But there are undoubtedly times when Versyp and Painter should remind themselves that it is all about the next drill; for themselves.
