photos by tom campbell, captions by stacy clardie Coach Gene Keady started these panels of senior class head shots, using only players who exhausted their eligibility at Purdue. (So no Glenn Robinson, for example.) It's been an area that comes in handy for Painter. He'll bring recruits in and show them the photos, able to give an update on nearly all of the former players' careers. There are coaches, private business owners, attorneys, a police officer, a sports agent, politicians, professional athletes and on and on. "I can go through them and people sit there and go, 'Wow,'" Painter said. On the second shelf in the bookcase attached to his desk, Painter has a photo with Purdue legend John Wooden and an autograph addressed to him on Wooden's Pyramid of Success. During his second season as Purdue's coach, Painter and his staff flew to Los Angeles to meet Wooden. A cabinet to right of Painter's desk is full of game balls, varying in accomplishments from his first career victory as a head coach at Southern Illinois to his landmark victories as boss of the Boilermakers. It includes a ball for Victory No. 200 — Painter enters the season 201-100 at Purdue. What does he remember about that first career victory, when Southern Illinois won 67-62 at Wyoming? "It was a guaranteed game, so we got money and we won," he said. "They only had one field goal in the last 11 minutes. We just clamped down." Near the door to his office, Painter has an entire cabinet devoted to photos from Purdue's alumni game, held for the first time in 2012. "I thought it was great," he said. "It was good to see a lot of our former players, especially from different eras, get together and talk and reminisce." The plan is for the game to be played every other year, and the next is tentatively scheduled for August 2014. f IllustrateD volume 24, issue 2 43
