change the way Purdue distributes the BTN money) right now, but we will take it case by case." Gold and Black: What do you think about the job you've seen from Darrell Hazell and also what impressed you when Purdue went through the hiring process? Daniels: "What impressed me first, second and third is the character of this guy, the way in which he carries himself, the expectations he sets for his team in terms of conduct and athletics that I think sets a wonderful standard and every Boilermaker should be really proud of that. "His coaching pedigree is a good one, a really good one, his record has shown he took a program that had never been successful and turned it around (at Kent State). We all have plenty of reason for hope. If Coach Hazell came into my home and said that he was hopeful that my son would go to his school, I would say that's the sort of person I want my child influenced by." Gold and Black: How do you teach patience in today's world? Daniels: "People don't have very long fuses. I got some of the first letters after the Cincinnati game. Let's just chalk that up to the passion of Boilermaker fans, which is a good thing. But I hope people are reasonable about this too. Let's see where we are in a year or two." Gold and Black: Nebraska in the Big Ten, we've kind of gotten used to that, and I suppose we'll get used to the fact that Maryland and Rutgers are in the Big Ten before too long. Daniels: "Oh, don't be too sure, I'm not used to the designated hitter yet. Times change and I think these are 98 IllustrateD volume 24, issue 2 John Langenkamp Daniels, pictured here with Gold and Black's Kyle Charters (left) and Alan Karpick, was a insightful guest on a recent edition of "Gold and Black LIVE." good changes. Nebraska fits very well just as Penn State did, and I assume the newcomers will, too. It's a different age and we all understand the value in the age of the Big Ten Network, so we'll assume it will work as well as the last expansion did." Gold and Black: So tell us who's next in line. Daniels: "You would have to ask (athletics director) Morgan (Burke), I don't know. It seems to me, and I could be wrong, but my sense is that now that you have these mega-conferences, the next emphasis will be on sorting out a governance arrangement that accommodates for that as opposed to a whole lot more churning inside of those conferences, but I could be wrong." Gold and Black: How much more difficult or different are the duties of being a university president than being governor? Daniels: "Very different, but that's a good thing; life's about variety. Purdue is a great place with potential everywhere. And in the old Purdue met- aphor, we hope to add our own row of bricks to all the great things that have brought Purdue to this level." Gold and Black: Do you get involved in recruiting a little bit? Daniels: "Occasionally. I am there when asked. I hope I am doing it in the right way. I always go back to the coaches, whoever it is. Most recently it was the wrestling team. Coach (Scott) Hinkel had me involved in three prospects so far. "I am still a rookie at this, but I go back to the coaches and ask for feedback. Am I doing this right? Am I leaving something out that I should mention? I generally tell the athletes and their parents things that maybe they haven't heard everywhere else. (We talk) about the academic reputation of the school, the values of the school, and all the ways in which we would try to help their son or daughter succeed if they choose us." Q: What do you think it takes to keep the student-athletes not only interested but also motivate them f
