7 19 Issue 61 / 2014 HIPHOP / RNB guestlist.net SO THIS RECORD HAS BEEN A LONG TIME IN THE MAKING. IS THIS YOUR FIRST VENTURE INTO PRODUCING? Ya this is my first album as a recording artist producer and I'm so thrilled to be bringing it to the world after 4 years in the making. GOING BACK TO THE BEGINNING YOU GOT TWO TURN TABLES AND A MIXER FOR YOUR 10TH BIRTHDAY RIGHT? I'm glad you brought that up because the story of the album doesn't really start four years ago the story of the album starts right then when I was 10 years old. I was nine and I asked my parents for two turntables and mixer and when I turned ten DJ Cassidy was born. At that age I was a hip hop kid and I still am at heart. I used to look up to some of the founders of hip-hop and I realised in order to be like my heroes I had to play like them. I started to looking into what kinda music they played. They were playing soul, funk, disco, rock and roll, reggae and everything under the sun and I was completely fascinated by that. It opened up my mind and made me want to be completely undefined as a DJ. I made it my motto at that age to be the kid that people would call on to play all music for all people all over the world and that still is my motto today. By the time I turned 18, I had started to live that motto. I started to play some of the hottest nightclubs and events around the world from America to Europe to Asia to Africa and beyond. I had the privilege of playing for a lot of people I admired and looked up to as a kid. I started playing for Puffy, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Russell Simmons, Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell, Oprah and even for the president. No matter where I was though, it was the soul music of the late 70's and early 80's that I began to view as the greatest and most universal dance music of all time. The classic records of that time spoke to everyone. I always said to myself why can't young people my age have music like this, that's new that's from our time. So four years ago I set out on a mission to bring the greatest and most universal dance music of all time back to the airwaves and back to the dance floor. And that's when the journey of the album all began. YOU BROUGHT TOGETHER SOME OF THE GREATEST MUSICIANS OF ALL TIME IN THIS ALBUM. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ONE OF THE AMAZING MOMENTS WHILE MAKING THE MUSIC? IN EUROPE RATHER THAN THE STATES? I reunited 22 of the most legendary musicians of the late 1970's and early 80's back in one room for the 1st time in over 30 years to channel their definitive sound with no samples and no covers. Then I knew I needed new voices to bring this music to life and these voices had to represent my generation and every genre in music, from RnB to pop to electronic to rock music. So I recruited 13 of the most renowned superstar recording artists of my era to record and produce original songs and that list includes John Legend, Estelle, Kelly Rowland, Melanie Fiona, Mary J Blige, Neyo, Cee Lo, Robin Thicke, Jessie J, Usher and R Kelly. THAT'S A CRAZY DEBUT ALBUM, LOOK AT THAT LINE UPMatt: That's The whole album has been a dream come true. I worked with 13 singers and 22 musicians, who are all icons. Some icons of the old school and some icons of our day. To put them all together to create this intoxicating explosive album has been a dream come true. WHAT'S THE SECRET TO BEING THE NUMBER 1 PARTY DJ? That's a tough question. I think one of the things that makes me so unique is what I mentioned earlier, my ability to play all music for all people all over the world. My goal to be diverse when I was young and my goal to be undefined has really served me well. YOU HAD BOBBY BROWN AND RAKIM AT YOUR 28THBIRTHDAY PARTY! Every year I throw a birthday party and I like to bring back an act from my childhood that inspired me when I was growing up. It's a thrill for me every summer, to meet my heroes and have them perform for me at my birthday party. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? I'm most looking forward to sharing the Paradise Royale with the party people across the world. It's been a 4-year journey in the making and I couldn't be any more thrilled to bring it to the dance floors across this planet.
