NYMPH()MANIAC
VOLUMES I & II
'Nymphomaniac' tells the story of Joe as she re-
counts the disasters, ecstasies and relationships
involved in her life as a sex addict. Charlotte
Gainsbourg portrays the protagonist with great
subtlety, opposite the captivating Stellan Skars-
gård. From her erotic awakenings as a child to
her extreme sexual desires an adult, Joe is argu-
ably the most tragic, enchanting and complete
character that Lars Von Trier has created to date.
Every character in Nymphomaniac is memo-
rable due to their deadly combination of per-
versity, mystery and charm. Stacy Martin's de-
but as Young Joe is simple, yet powerful and
courageous considering the film's content. Shia
LaBeouf, whose accent ranges from curious to
completely bizarre, is incredibly touching in the
film's poignant moments, whilst Jamie Bell's
role as a BDSM dominator is enthralling, but
nauseously frightening; a feeling that is evoked
throughout the film.
Von Trier finds beauty and humanity in the dark-
est corners of his script. If you hold the ability to
sit through four hours of explicit sexual content,
this film will blow your mind.
The most controversial film of the year had been dismissed,
applauded, despised and adored before it had even come
near the few screens it has been allowed to grace.
