Must sign up at ruggedradios.com/contingency CONTACT: team@ruggedradios.com comes from? Many racers think sponsorships come from putting decals on the sides of their race vehicles. Then if they win, there's some money or services that they're entitled to. That's true to a certain extent, but thinking of sponsors in this way is wrong. It's important to understand that there's a reason why those sponsors want that decal on the side of your vehicle, which is tied directly to where that money actually comes from. There are three areas that expenses are allocated within a company. These are Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), Overhead, and Marketing. Most of the sponsorship or contingency money comes from a company's marketing budget. These budgets are set during the year, and sometimes go up or down depending on the economic growth of their product or industry. To be sponsored by a company is to take hold of a sliver of their marketing budget. To be successfully sponsored means continually being able to get that sliver of the budget. That is why we must excel at being a marketing partner. To retain that portion of someone's marketing budget means your race program will be in direct competition against print ads, billboards, television, trade show booths, sales incentives and multiple other ways companies can spend that same marketing dollar. So the amount of exposure that you can deliver is very important and is the reason why decals must be displayed so that they can be seen. The bottom line is that the goal of any company's marketing budget is to generate sales for that company. As a marketing partner, and holding a sliver of the company's marketing departments budget, racers should ask themselves, what are we doing to produce sales for the companies that sponsor us? The answer may not be so cut and dry because you are not selling a product and collecting profits for a company. 075 SCORE JOURNAL
