18 / JULY.AUGUST.2015 RINKMAGAZINE.COM I ts design is as flawless as Mario Lemieux's skating. The look and appeal of UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, is a perfect representation of the combination that makes up its name: world-class sports medicine, first-class hockey development. Joining the two types of venues has never been done. Through the all-glass entrance, hockey players and patients are one in the same. Fourteen locker rooms stockpiled with hockey sticks and skates cohabitate under one roof with medical machines and a rehab facility. It provides both a practice home and treatment cen- ter for the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins as well as youth and college teams in the Pittsburgh area. There's no question, UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is one-of-a-kind. "UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is looking to be on the cutting edge," said Rich Hixon, executive director of strategic planning for the Penguins. "They have that medical capability that no one else has. You can come and both train and rehab all in one place. We want to become the premier destination for both those things."
