42 AUGUST 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED BY COREY BODDEN Notre Dame offered Mars (Pa.) High Rivals100 shooting guard Robby Carmody in May 2016, and just more than a year later locked him in as part of the program's 2018 recruiting class. The 6-4, 175-pounder headed to South Bend June 20-22 for an offi- cial visit with no intention of making a commitment to head coach Mike Brey's program. Yet by the end of the trip, Carmody found his future home. "It kind of came out of nowhere," Carmody explained. "I wasn't ex- pecting anything and I just wanted to visit and sit down and think about everything. There was no need to wait, though. I just felt this was the place for me. "It was just a perfect fit for me. Ev- erything about it with the academics, coaching staff, the playing style — even down to the players." Carmody said the feeling hit him when he walked in to meet with Brey. "Kind of when I walked in and Coach Brey had a Penguins jersey on," Carmody said with a laugh. "I have a great relationship with him. He's one of the best guys I've been able to meet throughout this process. I love him to death." Brey's system, which is known for its guard play, also played a major role in Carmody's decision to join the Irish. "They always bring in guards simi- lar to me and develop them really well," Carmody said. "They have unbelievable careers at Notre Dame and professionally, whether it be in the NBA or overseas. "I think I fit in pretty well. I'm re- ally versatile and I can do a lot of different things. I'm not just keyed into one spot on the floor. I think I can help out a lot as a guard who can do a variety of things." In eight games with Ohio Basket- ball Club on the adidas AAU circuit heading into the July evaluation pe- riods, Carmody averaged 19.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. The ris- ing senior posted 26.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game during his junior season while lead- ing Mars to the Class 5A Elite Eight. Assistant coach Ryan Ayers also helped recruit Carmody to South Bend and built a good relationship with the Western Pennsylvania product. "It's a really great one," Carmody said of his bond with Ayers. "It's not even just as a guy who is recruiting me. He's someone I can go to with homework questions and with any- thing in general. "He'll help me through it and he's just a really great guy." Carmody became the second commitment for the Irish following Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga point guard Prentiss Hubb, who commit- ted to Brey's program in mid-May. Carmody doesn't know too much about Hubb, who ranks as the No. 62 player nationally per Rivals, but has watched his film. Upper Arlington (Ohio) High four-star shooting guard Dane Goodwin joined the duo July 5. "I've been watching a lot about him now and I hear great things about him from the coaching staff," Carmody said of Hubb. "I'm excited to get to know him. He's not just a point guard who can score. The way he can move the ball and get people involved is unbelievable. "That's something you need in a championship team." Now that Carmody is part of the class, he will move on to being a recruiter. "I'm going to try and recruit some people if I can," Carmody said. "I'm definitely going to try a little bit with [Stevens Point (Wis.) High four-star power forward] Joey Hauser." Carmody, who is ranked as the No. 89 overall player in the coun- try by Rivals, also received offers from Michigan, Purdue, Maryland, Stanford, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Xavier, among others. "Hopefully I'll be able to show them a lot of skill and bring some championships," Carmody said when asked what Irish fans can ex- pect when he steps on the court in South Bend in 2018. ✦ FILM ANALYSIS "Robby Carmody is a tremendous addition for Notre Dame," Rivals national analyst Corey Evans said. "There might not have been a better fit for both sides as Carmody is a ferocious competitor and a no- BS type of ballplayer. Someone that will be relied upon for his defensive prowess where he can guard multiple spots, Carmody should immediately contribute in South Bend. "He has become a more consistent shooter in recent months, but is also an underrated playmaker and major athlete. Altogether, he should pair nicely alongside Prentiss Hubb in what could be a really good 2018 class. "Carmody's best skill is his competitive grit. Sure, it doesn't sound like an elite skill, but he is someone that is going to make him get better and force Mike Brey's hand in getting him onto the floor as he will be buy into any task forced upon him." COMMITMENT PROFILE ROBBY CARMODY "IT KIND OF CAME OUT OF NOWHERE. I WASN'T EXPECTING ANYTHING AND I JUST WANTED TO VISIT AND SIT DOWN AND THINK ABOUT EVERYTHING. THERE WAS NO NEED TO WAIT, THOUGH. I JUST FELT THIS WAS THE PLACE FOR ME."
