Purdue has decided to redshirt the sophomore, who is recovering from double knee surgeries in the offseason. Thornton, who was dealing with tendonitis in her knees prior to the surgeries, has been limited during practice and been only in street clothes for games. And now two games into the Big Ten, Coach Sharon Versyp announced that Thornton's return would come next season. "Not going to push it, there's no reason," Versyp said. "We don't want to waste a year and she didn't want to waste a year trying to come back to play. But it's not worth it at this point; she's too valuable to do that." Thornton's right knee has recovered well, Versyp said, but the left still gives her a bit of trouble. Considering Purdue has depth at the wing — and that Thornton likely would get only spot minutes — there was little reason 2012-13 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE to rush her to the court. Last season, Thornton played in 18 games off the bench. Now, she'll have three years of eligibility remaining, starting next season. "You just don't want her to be sore," Versyp said. "There's no reason to push it when we have 'til next November for her to be extremely healthy and not to have it continuous pain or continuous problems." Ostarello With Big Game Certainly Sam Ostarello's career-high 19 rebounds against Nebraska were eye-opening, but so were her 17 points, particularly considering how they came. The senior forward was as aggressive as ever against the Cornhuskers, hitting jumpers in critical spots to help Purdue to an overtime win. Her three-pointer — her first in three seasons — with twoand-a-half minutes in regulation, which just beat the shot clock, gave the Boilermakers a lead. Then, in overtime, her 15-footer from near the free throw line put Purdue ahead to stay with 26 seconds left. "We want it to stay consistent now and I think when you have a game like that it will just bring you more confidence," Versyp said.
