Weekly Pic Tom Campbell In an image that epitomizes the Boilermakers' fate in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, Ronnie Johnson has a look of frustration, but is also unable to escape the clutches of Nebraska's Dylan Talley. Although threatened late, the Cornhuskers were always able to keep enough of a margin to pull off the upset. And that was the most important game of the season last game. That's why it leaves a little bit of doubt there. That's our challenge as coaches, to get them to realize how important this is for us as a program to get that consistency of playing hard every night." Coach Matt Painter on whether his team will play hard The CBI Goal It goes without saying that Coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers hope playing in the CBI will pay dividends down the road. In each of the five previous years of the lower-division tourney, it has worked out well for at least one team the following year. Here's a list: Team CBI finish NCAA next season (tourney exit) Pitt 2012 CBI champion 2013 NCAA No. 8 seed Butler 2012 CBI semifinalist 2013 NCAA No. 6 seed Creighton 2011 CBI runner-up 2012 NCAA No. 8 seed (third round) VCU 2010 CBI champion 2011 NCAA No. 11 seed (Final Four) Richmond 2009 CBI semifinalist 2010 NCAA No. 7 seed (first round) Washington 2008 CBI first round 2009 NCAA No. 4 seed (second round) This Week In Purdue History March 19, 1988 • The Boilermakers explode in the second half to dispose of Memphis State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in South Bend. After leading by five points at the break, Coach Gene Keady's team puts up 62 points to reach the 100-point mark for the second (and most recent) time in school history in the Big Dance. Troy Lewis leads all scorers with 21. March 20, 2001 • Purdue rolls to a 79-61 win over Auburn in the second round of the NIT in front of 5,261 fans in Mackey Arena. Guard Maynard Lewis was hot from deep with 16 points, and Rodney Smith came off the bench to score 15. Purdue was eliminated from the NIT three days later in a tough double overtime loss to Alabama in front of 8,484 in Mackey. The loss to the Tide was the last time the Boilermakers hosted a postseason game in West Lafayette. March 19, 2007 • Playing in Minneapolis, Coach Sharon Versyp's No. 2-seeded team defeats Georgia Tech 76-63 advancing to the Sweet 16 in her first season. The Yellow Jackets, coached by former Purdue All-American MaChelle Joseph, fell behind by 20 at the half and never could dig out of the hole. Katie Gearlds led all scorers with 26 points.
