Exciting news was announced by President Mitch Daniels on March
1, 2013, regarding a two-year tuition freeze on the West Lafayette
campus. This action will help reduce the burden of college
expenses and provide the chance for students and their families to
better plan and prepare their finances.
The John Purdue Club is appreciative that the University is
addressing the critical issue of rising tuition costs. Over the past
10 years, the expenses associated with each student-athlete have
escalated dramatically, placing an even greater responsibility on
our members to raise the funds necessary to cover the scholarship
budget. The 2012-13 academic year alone requires $10 million in
annual support.
Still, costs outside of tuition are associated with our Intercollegiate
Athletics commitment to more than 500 Purdue student-athletes.
There are categories that do not fall into the zero percent tuition
freeze, such as room and board, books and supplies, individual
course fees, etc. These expenditures may cause the champion level
membership (the cost of an in-state scholarship) to continue to rise,
though more slowly, over the next few years.
The John Purdue Club is thankful for the attention being paid to
such an important topic, but we ask that members, alumni and
fans realize the financial pressure placed upon Purdue Athletics
has not stopped. During the 2011-12 school year, we experienced a
$600,000 deficit, and JPC membership, which once topped 10,000,
has dwindled to 8,400 members. These 8,400 are extremely loyal
and generous and have been with us through both good and bad
years. Every day we appreciate their support.
As one of only seven NCAA Division I-A athletics departments (also
LSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and Texas) to
receive $0 in subsidies from the university or state, we depend

upon contributions to provide the resources needed for our
student-athletes to succeed both on the field and in the classroom.
The John Purdue Club's focus is to provide a great education for all
those who proudly don a Purdue jersey.
Please help the JPC fulfill our commitment to our student-athletes
by answering the call from the "Next Step Campaign" (going to
the next membership level and receiving reward priority points) or
simply by increasing your annual commitment by $100. A "no-cost"
solution to our ever-present challenge is to speak with those in
your Purdue network – other alumni, relatives and fans (especially
those living in Bloomington)– about our goal. Motivate others
to join (the First Team level is only $200 a year) and give back
to Purdue Athletics while receiving benefits not available to the
general public.
Together, we can ensure that all 18 of our programs reach
their goals. Let's protect the legacy and tradition of Purdue
Athletics and move toward a more successful future for the
Old Gold and Black.
