10 FALL 2020 Nancy E. Berry, Editor P.S. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art New England is calling for entries for the 2021 Bulfinch Awards. Visit classicist-ne.org for details on how you can enter. W ITH ALL OF US SPENDING MORE TIME IN OUR homes than ever before during the pandemic, our living spaces have to be multifunctional, efficient, and most of all calming and comforting. In this issue we feature houses that have been designed to maximize comfort and function. Flavin Architects designs a modern farmhouse on Cape Ann that retains the essence of the New England Colonial that once stood in its place. Colin Flavin employs a design method that he calls Natural Modernism, whereby buildings are designed to relate to their surroundings; the new home has sculpted lines and employs traditional materials in its design. In this two-story home with a modern appendage housing a screened-in porch—a calming, reflective space—Flavin captures tranquil views through large windows, blurring the lines between inside and outside and creating a serene home that rests comfortably within the landscape. Designer Katie Hutchison transforms a dated ranch in Wenham into an open-concept living space for empty nesters. The homeowners, who love to entertain, wanted to be able to cook dinner while conversing with guests in the adjacent dining and living spaces. The color palette is kept soothing with muted tones for relaxing surroundings. Jan Gleysteen Architects creates an addition for a Jacobean-style house in Winchester that blends the new and old together seamlessly, all the while prioritizing their client's needs. Inside, the home is a celebration of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship and 21st-century living. Outside, the home is a preserved piece of Winchester's architectural history. Also in this issue we celebrate the 2020 Best of the North Shore Home Award winners. We congratulate the architects, interior designers, builders, and landscape designers who help shape our homes into serene, beautiful, and functional places to live on the North Shore.
