HIP HOP 24 guestlist.net / RNB EVENT PREVIEW: THE SHOW-R&B SUPERSTARS Issue 56 / 2013 GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: YC THE CYNIC Wembley Arena, London is cranking up the R&B vibe on the 16th November The Show-R&B Superstars is featuring; as the name states some of the biggest artists in R&B. Faith Evens, Donnel Jones, Ginuwine, Dave Hollister, Kelly Price, Sisqo, Chico Debarge, J. Holiday and Adina Howard. Not to mention some more special guests. This is going to be a sick event! Check out http://www.wembleyarena.co.uk/events/detail/the-showpart-2 for more details. EVENT PRIVEW THE 02 @ 6:30 Matthew Jefferson, better known in the hip hop community by his moniker YC The Cynic, is an up-and-coming emcee hailing from The Bronx. With three awesome mixtapes and a freshly released LP under his belt, YC has been making waves in the hip hop underground for all the right reasons, and here is why: You'd be forgiven for thinking that the recently turned 23 YC is much older than he is. Carrying your own, which is instantly recognisable style in a mature genre like hip hop, is only reserved for the dedicated and the blessed, and YC has both in bucketloads. As with all good lyricists, each of his tapes gives a hint away about himself as a person, what he does, and what he surrounds himself with. For - what some people might label - a conscious rapper, this is pretty important. In a tradition which seems to be quite established among other conscious wordsmiths such as KRS-One and Immortal Technique, YC has set up his own community centre based in his hometown in the Bronx, focusing on encouraging art and education within the community. Whether it be a gangster lifestyle or one involving aiding the community, it is just refreshing to see real authenticity in hip hop, a genre that prides itself on such qualities and arguably has had some trouble in the past. YC's authenticity becomes clear through in his music and it is this, as well as his tight style and delivery, which makes him a great artist. If you are going to start anywhere with YC The Cynic, we recommend his latest LP GNK. Not only is it YC's best release, but it is probably one of the best hip hop releases this yea - period. Production-wise, the release is great; you tend to find that a lot of good hip hop sees the emcee and producer working close together, and GNK is no exception. Frank Drake is responsible for the beats on this LP and it will come as no surprise that him and YC worked on this project together, track by track. Lyrically the album touches on a lot of areas but is still super cohesive as YC draws together the concepts of god, race and power - leaving you with a lot to think about. If you like your hip hop perfectly enunciated with a thoughtful, philosophical edge, YC is for you.
