INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK GOING FOR GOLD • University of Michigan students Meryl Davis and Charlie White earned a gold medal at the Sochi Olympic Games in ice dancing Feb. 17. The two-time world champions are part of an eight-participant U-M contingent for this year's Games. In a new competition at the Olympics in which the multiple disciplines of figure skating are combined under one team umbrella, Davis and White helped Team USA to a bronze medal in the Team Ice Dance Free Dance Feb. 9. They then took gold in their own event, Feb. 16-17, scoring a 195.52 to topple Canada's pair of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (190.99). Three other one-time U-M students, Evan Bates and siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani, also competed in ice dancing. Bates teamed up with Madison Chock to place eighth, while Maia and Alex Shibutani finished ninth. Meanwhile, former Michigan hockey players Max Pacioretty (USA), Carl Hage- lin (Sweden) and Brian Lebler (Austria) participated in qualifying action, with Team USA and Team Sweden advancing to the quarterfinals Feb. 19. WORK WITH U-M FOOTBALL STAFF • The Michigan football program is gearing up for a number of events over the next few months that will bring high school coaches and fans alike closer to the action. From March 27-29, the Maize and Blue will host a Football Coaches' Clinic. Information for the clinic can be found at michigancoachesclinic.com or by calling (734) 764-2592. U-M will also host a Strength and Conditioning Clinic in April, with info avail- able at strength.umich.edu. Fans looking to spend a day learning from Michigan's coaches and players can attend the Men's Football Experience June 4-5 or the Women's Football Academy June 7. The men's event (footballexperience.umich.edu) will benefit the "Men of Michigan" Prostate Cancer Fund while the women's event (wom- ensacademy.umich.edu) will donate its proceeds to the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Toussaint for the 2012 opener against Alabama over a summer drinking and driving incident; and doing the same with tight end A.J. Williams for this year's Michigan State game. Hoke has indicated that he will not comment about the Gibbons matter.
