SXSW 2014 Interactive Festival 132 133 SXSW 2014 Interactive Festival SOCIAL & PRIVACY SHERATON AUSTIN: 701 E 11TH STREET 3:30 PM Sheraton: Capitol ABCD How Do We Save Our Digital Lives? Our personal history is digital. When we use social platforms we assume our data will be preserved, that they won't pull the plug on the site. Which is what happened when Broadcastr, an app that encouraged folks to share their stories, shut down. A layer of personal stories vanished. The story of this app embodies the threat to our personal archives in our digital world. Mary Snauffer Solo • Intermediate • #archives 3:30 PM Sheraton: Capitol EFGH Hacking 4 Good: Unlock the Mind & Change Behavior Many of society's most frustrating problems are driven by human behavior. To address these challenges, we'll need to understand why people do the things they do. Why do people choose soda over juice? Spend rather than save? Understanding the answers to these questions can help us build solutions to these seemingly intractable problems. Anna Mohan, Jitinder Kohli, Jonathan Zinman, Shrupti Shah Panel • Intermediate • #hack4good 3:30 PM Sheraton: Capitol View North Dear Taco Vendor, How Are You Securing My Data? One of the cool things about SXSW is that everywhere you look, someone or something is handing out free goodies. But when you get something for free, more often than not YOU are the product. You are trading personal information in exchange for an item that would otherwise cost money. Let's talk about where this data is going, who will have access to it and how it is being secured. David Tishgart Core Conversation • Intermediate • #data4food 3:30 PM Sheraton: Capitol View South The Myth of the Mobile Mom Good old mom, the holder of purse strings, the target of every CPG brand and retailer, the prize everyone has their eye on. With more clients asking for "a cool mobile idea that targets mom in store," it's time to ask, "Is a mom juggling a cart of kids and a grocery list really in the mood to stop everything to engage with your brand?" We don't think so. Leyla Dailey, Molly Garris Core Conversation • Intermediate • #mobilemoms 3:30 AM Sheraton: Creekside Truth Will Set You Free but Data Will Piss You Off The human data collection methods and process, the various motives of the people involved, the political or social systems in place all define how data are presented and perceived. Can any presentation of data be truly objective in the first place? This ses- sion will explore the issues and ethics around data visualization and suggest how we can use data in tandem with social responsibility. Jonathan Schwabish, Kim Rees, Jake Porway, Grace Rodriguez Panel • Intermediate • #dataethics 5:00 PM Sheraton: Capitol ABCD Actively Participating in the Big Data Revolution Big Data is all around us and it seems the data is busy solving the world's problems. Every day, there are new stories about the power of Big Data, but for many, the Big Data phenomenon seems distant. Elissa Fink Solo • Intermediate • #DataRev 5:00 PM Sheraton: Capitol EFGH Beyond Unplugging: How to Stay Sane Online We'll dig into our digital and personal toolboxes to share the practices, apps and gadgets that can foster a healthy relationship with technology. Panelists will kick off the conversation with their thoughts and suggestions for the first half of this session; then, the floor is open for ideas and tips from the audience. How do you maintain your health, sanity and relationships while using tech? Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, Lauren Bacon, Rohan Gunatillake Panel • Intermediate • #saneonline 5:00 PM Sheraton: Capitol View North Without Their Consent: Ending Revenge Porn Across the country, there is an increasingly widespread problem of abusers and per- petrators posting images and video footage online as a tactic of abuse, harassment, bullying and extortion. Regardless of the situation, when images and video are posted online of someone without their consent as a tactic of abuse, action needs to be taken to protect the victim and hold the abuser accountable. Christina Gagnier, Erica Johnstone Core Conversation • Beginner • #endrevenge 5:00 PM Sheraton: Capitol View South You Never Graduated: Social Media As High School Be popular. Don't miss out. Figure out what's cool before it's not. The unwritten laws from high school are now repeating themselves in today's social media. From busi- ness professionals to cultural commentators and stand-up comedians, we all have the same goals of getting noticed and staying relevant. Andrew Cunningham, Mea Cole Tefka Core Conversation • Intermediate • #SXSWHS2014 5:00 PM Sheraton: Creekside Telling the NSA to [Back] Off Every day more revelations about the NSA's invasions of our rights come to light. Is there anything you personally can do about it? Yes! We'll walk you through encryption and anti-surveillance technologies and discuss how effective activism can make a dif- ference. It's time to tell the NSA to [back] off. Chris Conley, Evan Greer Dual • Intermediate • #nsabackoff SUNDAY, MARCH 9 11:00 AM Sheraton: Capitol ABCD How Social Technologies Create New Languages If you're a social marketer, you've probably heard the same tips again and again. Use short-form content. Be conversational, not corporate. These principles assume that our communities have the same communication preferences across multiple networks. In this talk, we'll challenge this assumption head-on. Roland Smart Solo • Advanced • #SocialTech 11:00 AM Sheraton: Capitol EFGH Brands Driven by Artistic Communities The beauty of community driven brands is the natural order of customer focus. Hear representatives from three brands discuss how they have built brands centered around artistic communities. And learn how their artistic communities are transform- ing beauty, music and the maker movement. Jenny Dearing, Josh Karpf Dual • Intermediate • #BrandByArt 11:00 AM Sheraton: Capitol View North A Cloud of One's Own The cloud has transformed startup and business IT, but the benefits haven't filtered down to personal use. What if we could map and reduce home energy use, secure ac- counts with the hundreds of sites that have our information, or plot our real life social graph and watch for unexpected events? Dave Sanford, Jeff Kramer Core Conversation • Intermediate • #MyCloud 11:00 AM Sheraton: Capitol View South Loyalty Is Dead. Long Live Loyalty Are today's rewards programs actually building consumer loyalty or are we simply pre- conditioned to act/react based on last year's model around some trending buzzword?
