What chemicals do we use? For Water Balance Now you know about sanitisation and stabiliser, here's how to keep your pool water balanced, and what chemicals to use. Remember, water balance is about pH, Total Alkalinity, Water Hardness and Total Dissolved Solids. For pH pH is a scale of 1-14. Ideally your pool water should be around 7.2 to 7.8. If pH is too high then Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) or Dry Acid is used to bring the pH down. If it is too low then use Buffer/Sodium Bicarbonate to raise the pH. This will also increase the alkalinity. You can also use pH Up, (Soda Ash) but this product is best left in the hands of professionals. It increases pH very quickly. If the right quantity is not used the pH can rise very quickly which means you would then have to use Hydrochloric Acid or Dry Acid to bring it down again. Then up it goes again. This is referred to as pH bounce. There are many swimming pool chemicals available. The majority are for correcting unbalanced, algae riddled, and unsanitary pools.
