Sand Filters These days sand filters seem to be the filter of choice. They are efficient and need very little maintenance apart from backwashing when the pressure rises. When pressure increases by an average of 40kpm your filter needs backwashing. After backwashing the pressure should decrease by the same amount of pressure. Over time the pressure drop will indicate when the filter is due for a sand change. Back washing is easy (see the instructions below). The water then runs through the filter in reverse. This flushes contaminants out of the filter. It happens quickly and uses a lot of water because it is flushing it away to waste. Instructions for backwashing • Turn the pump off. Also turn off the salt chlorinator if you have one. • Turn the handle on top of the filter to the backwash position. • Now turn the pump on • Run for only 2-3 minutes or until sight glass becomes clear. • Now turn the pump off. • Turn the handle on top of the filter to the rinse position. • Turn the pump on. • Let it rinse for approximately 30 seconds. • Turn the pump off. • Turn the handle on top of the filter to the Filter position • Turn the pump back on. 30 Follow this link to see Neptune Sand Filters
