When you are around him, you want to see and know more. Those of us who follow Purdue football closely will get to know him better in the days, weeks and months ahead. For now, we have only had a glimpse of the guy who hopes to lead Purdue football to better days. His introductory press conference on Dec. 5 lasted for about Tom Campbell an hour. Yet, Hazell got a lot accomplished in those 60 minutes. For those in the room, or watching on BTN or the Internet, he was in a word: Impressive. A little research into Hazell, as we have done in this issue, and you will see a man who gets rave reviews from just about every corner of the football landscape. He seems to fit perfectly, better than the cap he is wearing in the photo here. But it won't be easy for him. Danny Hope brought Purdue football a certain distance. Consecutive bowl games, arguably improved talent and a true passion for the game are what has come forth over the past four years. But it needs now to connect, to turn, as they say, into something bigger. And when athletic director Morgan Burke made the move to Hazell, Burke admitted that this program needed to find a higher level of sustained and consistent success. But of equal or greater importance, it has to connect once again with its fan base in a way that will bring folks to Ross-Ade Stadium. It's hard to connect these days, not just with fans, but with anybody. There are so many distractions, so many things you can do with your time. Hazell will be pulled in different directions. Just about any college football coach worth his $2 million a year salary is. But, if first impressions are any indication, this guy is organized, focused and very personable. And Purdue fans have used this line a hundred times in the past few weeks: "If he can win big at Kent State, this guy must be able to coach." That gives Purdue football fans something to look TABLE OF CONTENTS Leading Off: Pictures . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Darrell Hazell Feature . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 Q&A with Morgan Burke. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 From Brian Neubert. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 Football assistant search. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16 New coach: What it means . . . . . . . . . . . . 18 Bowl overview. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 Opponent preview . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22 Robert Marve feature. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 Football depth chart . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com Football recruiting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28 Lafayette Legend . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 NFL Boilers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34 John Purdue Club Report . . . . . . . . . . . . . 36 Men's basketball update . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 38 Men's basketball lineups . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39 Gallery: Men's basketball. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 A.J. We are grateful for your support over the past 23 years and we look forward to earning your business in 2013 and beyond. forward to in the new year. It is time to build once again, something that can achieve sustained success. That hasn't been easy for Purdue football in its history, but I sense we might be on to something, in Hazell, that could change the hearts and minds of all that follow Boilermaker football. But here's the one caveat that no one in today's world wants to read or hear: It will take time. Sustained success always does. 2012-13 (Vol. 23) Publishing Schedule Gold & Black Illustrated Print Magazine Issue Topic Date March/April BB/FB recruiting March 1 May/June Spring FB/BB April 30 July/August FB Preview July 1 Gold and Black Express Digital Magazine We have improved Gold and Black Express with a more interactive platform.
