Coach Matt Painter gives directions to senior D.J. Byrd during an earlyseason game. Byrd struggled shooting early with the one exception being the Boilermakers' road win against Clemson when he made six three-pointers. Davis goes in for a layup in the season opener. The freshman opened plenty of eyes with his 21-point scoring barrage against Notre Dame — it was more points than he had scored combined in the previous eight games. Simpson and Byrd battle for a rebound in the season opener against Bucknell. For the most part, rebounding hasn't been Purdue's nemesis as they held a double-digit rebound advantage per game over the opponents through mid-December. Seemingly always with a smile and lots of energy, Brian Cardinal carries on a conversation with John Nine. Cardinal is employed part-time for the JPC, so fans will get used to seeing him around Mackey Arena. GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com Gold & Black IllustrateD • volume 23, issue 3 •  41
