41 CHAPTER 4: RESULTS In this chapter, the results of the data gathered, including the demographic characteristics will be presented. Participants & Demographics The demographic characteristics of the participants are presented in table 1. One hundred and fifty street food vendors working with cooked food participated in this study. The majority of the street food vendors (82%) were under 50 years of age. The level of education was generally spread across the variables with 38% having undergone general education (at least nine years of schooling). Interestingly, 13% respondents had no education and 27% had received a primary level of education with a further 20% having attained matriculation (minimum of 12 years at school). The vast majority of the respondents (95%) were the owners of the business and 47% had been in business for longer than 3 years, whilst 23% had been in business for a year or less. Just over 52% were the sole operators with 29% creating a job opportunity for an additional person. Seventy seven percent stated that the reason for participation in this type of business venture was unemployment.
