2013 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Q&A WHAT IS THE FIRST WEBSITE YOU CHECK IN THE MORNING? WHAT IS THE LAST MP3 YOU DOWNLOADED? EM: I dont actually check a website first thing in the morning. EM: Sail TE: One? I check about 120+ sites first when I get to the studio and having it to narrow it down to one is all kinds of painful. Let me give you at least my current top 10 bookmarks: Lore (exp.lore.com), NYTimes Videos (nytimes. com/video), Laughing Squid (laughingsquid.com), Michael Galpert (michaelgalpert.com), Seth Godin (sethgodin.typepad.com), But Does It Float (butdoesitfloat.com), Stellar (stellar.io), Brain Pickings (brainpickings.org), Melissa Easton (melissaeastondesign.com) and Hacker News. TE: I dont download MP3s, I listen to my music on Rdio. I recently added Dive by Tycho. JU:Not sure if this counts, but gmail.com. Usually around 5:45am because my son likes waking up before the sun. WHAT PERSON INSPIRES YOU? MI: zombo.com TE: Maira Kalman (illustrator), Ben Chestnut (founder of MailChimp), Milton Glaser (design legend), Neil deGrasse Tyson (director of the Hayden Planetarium), Andrew Zuckerman (andrewzuckerman.com) and Georg Lois (advertising legend). WHAT IS THE FIRST COMPUTER YOU EVER OWNED? EM: Commodore VIC-20 TE: The Macintosh SE JU:Leading Edge. I remember clipping the ads for it thinking it was the coolest thing in the world. MI: A 100 mhz Packard Bell. It was the most incredible piece of shit Ive ever owned. SkiFree, Encarta, AOL chat rooms the works. I kept it for years until Quake came out and I wanted to run dual 3DFX Voodoo2 cards so I could play it in OpenGL, then I was like, fuck you. Packard Bell, youre dead to me. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT IN LIFE? EM: Staying sane. (I am sane, right?) TE: My children: Ella (6) and Tilo (2) JU:P!nks Raise Your Glass (because my son deleted it). MI: A few weeks ago I downloaded The Gremlins theme song so I could turn it into a ringtone. EM: Darwin JU:It may sound clich, but my Mom. She is the most generous and loyal person that I know and let me do crazy sh*t when I was young, like ride a bucking calf in a rodeo (made the 8 seconds, couldnt get off, and of course, landed in a pile of manure when all was said and done). She gets all the credit for me embracing risks and following through to see my ideas realized. MI: From a long time ago: Bill Watterson. I love his drawing style, his creativity, his humor, and his message. From somewhat recently: John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Andrew Stanton basically anyone at Pixar, really. From very recently: Louis C.K. Behind his crass humor hes saying things that are very smart. WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ? EM:1493 JU:My daughter and son. Next would honestly be OUYA I never felt so exposed in my life. We were worried about our $950k goal. It was one of largest Kickstarter asks to date but we knew any amount less wouldnt do it. TE: Bend Not Break by Ping Fu MI: When I was six years old, I dressed up as Batman for Halloween. A few days after Halloween ended I put on my Batman costume and snuck out of my parents house in the middle of the night and went outdoors to fight crime. I only made it to the edge of our yard before I got scared of the dark and came back in, but technically I WAS Batman for about six minutes. MI: Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong. Really interesting read. Christopher Columbus was kind of a huge dick. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN 2013? TE: August 19, 1871, when the Wright brothers took flight for the first time in history. TE: Getting a handle on my inboxes. And owning less stuff. JU:I want to knock OUYA out of the park. Id love to expose the next great game to a new audience of enthusiastic game fans who just love games. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT IN HISTORY? EM: Moon landing JU:The days my kids were born. MI: When the T-101 got lowered into molten steel and gave John the thumbs up. Because fuck you, Skynet. WHAT DO YOU ENVISION AS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BREAKTHROUGH OR TREND IN THE NEXT DECADE? EM: Either humans on Mars or true AI. MI: More comics. 2012 was wonderful, but strange. I felt like I got wrapped up in some really great causes like Bearlove Good, Cancer Bad and the Tesla Museum, but as a result I havent put out as much new material as I used to. TE: The shift from owning stuff to simply having access to it when needed. The Internet allows collaborative consumption to thrive; take Zipcar and Airbnb for example. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FILM? JU The television will change as we know it. It will truly become *smart* and regain the place it has lost to the computer as the focal point for all information, entertainment, utilities, and communication in the home. EM: Star Wars TE: Playtime by Jacque Tati JU A Few Good Men. You cant handle the Truth! MI: The Dark Crystal MI: The electric car, interplanetary exploration, and fiber Internet services. Maybe all three of these at once: a Tesla car landing on Mars while tweeting about it. SXSW 2013 Interactive Festival | 107 PROGRAMMING EM: Liftoff, go hypersonic, return and land propulsively back at the launch site with a Falcon 9 flight design rocket.Have the first profitable quarter in Teslas nine year history (its about time!) and hopefully stay that way.Build out the free long distance Supercharger network so that people can go all the way from LA to NY purely on electricity without spending a penny. JU:Ready Player One! Come on, 80s + Video Games... I was in heaven. I would take it to a desert island.
