What superpower would you most like? Immortality. I have a lot of things on my to-do list, and Id like to exploit the concept of compounding interest on a grand scale. What is your biggest fear? Have you ever seen the show Locked Up Abroad? That. What person or company inspires you? Hobbes the tiger is my spirit animal. What advice would you give to aspiring designers and visual storytellers? Draw. Every day. Draw something. Itll make your brain feel good, and itll make you a better communicator. THE SXSW BIG BAG is the canvas souvenir tote you receive when you pick up your badge and registration materials. Each year, artwork for the SXSW Big Bag is contributed by a different member of our community. TEN QUESTIONS with Jessica Hagy, 2013 Big Bag Artist Can you tell us a bit about your creative process in developing the design for the 2013 Interactive bag? SXSW is full of acronyms and insider lingo. I started from a page full of Internet alphabet soup and worked from there. Favorite writing instrument? Im left-handed, so permanent markers that prevent smearing are mandatory equipment. Your award-winning blog became an amazing book, and you have contributed to countless others. What was the best and worst part about publishing Indexed into a book? Best part? My favorite part (person) in the whole process is my agent, Ted Weinstein. He emailed me a few weeks after I started the blog (in 2006), and hes been my guide and helper ever since. Once Teds number was in my phone, everything else just fell into place. Worst part? I suppose that having the book come out in 2008, when the economy was dry heaving, wasnt ideal. Overall, though, I cant complain Im terribly lucky to get to cartoon for a living. Regarding new projects on the horizon, rumor has it you have a new book in the works. Any details you can share? Absolutely. How to be Interesting is coming out this Spring (so, yep, now-ish) from Workman Publishing. Its probably one of the most fun projects Ive ever worked on. The book is based on an article I wrote for Forbes that got a million and a half views, so I guess it struck a nerve. Its a fully illustrated instruction manual for defeating ennui and being good company, even when youre alone. Discover more of Jessica Hagys funny and insightful work at jessicahagy.info. What is the last book that you read? I love the movie The Falls, and the entire movie was put out in book form, which is great to pick up and thumb through for random inspiration. Google Peter Greenaway The Falls for great non-linear storytelling about a Violent Unknown Event that makes people take on bird-like qualities, dream of water, drive in circles, and otherwise behave erratically. Its amazing. What is your favorite word? Gibbous. It means convex in context of a celestial object, usually the moon.
