FAir Fyi In 1942 the Eastern Idaho State Fair shut down operations in July, allowing individu- als to focus their attention on helping the American war effort. The event’s leaders rented out their building to further assist the county through the storage of sur- plus foodstuffs. On Dec. 10, fire destroyed the commercial building which contained a potato dehydration plant, consuming 250,000 pounds of potatoes, 50 tons of coal and all equipment inside. It took over 10 years before the structure could be rebuilt. Operations resumed in 1944 and have continuously held the Eastern Idaho State Fair ever since. On September 22, 1944, less then one week after the sights and sounds of the festival had dissipated from the area, the Blackfoot labor committee announced that 500 Italian prisoners of war would call the fairgrounds home during the “acute har- vest labor crisis in the country.” Four day later the army set up headquarters in the east office building to guard and manage the prisoners who dug sugar beets and potatoes during their stay in Southeast Idaho. For over a month the prisoners of war proved that the war affected people in Idaho as well as other countries. 40 East idaho statE fair GuidE | 2010 2009 steer clAssic Winners Class 1 1st place: NA 2nd place: Cooper Jensen 3rd place: Scott Bradshaw Class 2 1st & 2nd place: Madison Jones 3rd place: Bracken Dorius Class 3 1st place: Morgan Nash 2nd place: NA 3rd place: Cody Willmore BArrel rAcinG in 4-d Aside from the exciting action, barrel racing is like many rodeo-related events in that it has its share of jargon. If you are new to the sport, you will certainly hear—and perhaps scratch your head—at the mention of the “4-D format.” Nope, it’s not some crazy Hollywood space-time gimmick. It actually stands for “four divi- sions.” All riders, regardless of ability, run in the same barrel race. The four divisions are then deter- mined by time brackets. With the 4-D format, the overall fastest time of the race is used to set the time brackets for the four divisions. The NBHA awards points to members in all divisions on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis for first place through fifth place, regardless of the number of entries or pay- ing places. 1st division: These are the riders with the fastest times. 2nd division: These are competitors who ran 1/2 second or slower than the overall fastest time. 3rd division: These are competitors who ran one second or slower than the overall fastest time. 4th division: These are competitors who ran two seconds or slower than the overall fastest time.
