12 FILM guestlist.net Issue 58 / 2013 IEW V RE MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM We hoped it would never come, but decades later the time is right to pay respects. Anticipated by its creators for more than twenty years, the 133 minute adaptation of the autobiography of the same name will shake tears out of the hardiest boots. The film will not let you down lightly, and rightly so, since the legend himself was hardly ever given an easy ride of life. Fortunately, however, he would be happy to know about the talent that came together to create this work, including director Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl), producer Anant Singh (South African anti-apartheid activist) and screenwriter William Nicholson (Shadowlands). Thor god Idris Elba and Skyfall's Naomie Harris take lead roles as Mandela and Winnie, his first wife. The film was removed from South African cinemas on the day of Mandela's death as a mark of respect, but replaced again the day after. The soundtrack will be as heart-warming as the potent depiction of the leader's strength and resilience. U2 have even written a song especially for the film, entitled Ordinary Love.
