6 Executive Summary Executive Summary This report summarizes the activities and achievements of the Department of Paediatrics, Mount Sinai Hospital, between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2013 under the leadership of Dr. Shoo Lee. The report is divided into 3 main sections—Clinical Care, Research, and Education and Training—which are the 3 areas of excellence that we focus on in the department. Mount Sinai Department of Paediatrics in a Nutshell Our department is one of the largest neonatal care departments in Canada, with 112 beds and over 10,000 patient encounters each year provided through our 7 clinical services, including: • Antenatal consults for women with high-risk pregnancies in our Labour and Delivery Unit, Antenatal Ward, and Special Pregnancy Clinic; • Resuscitation and stabilization of newborn infants in Labour and Delivery; • Level 2 and Level 3 neonatal care in our 57-bed NICU using a mixed acuity model; • Normal newborn care in the 55-bed David & Stacey Cynamon Mother & Baby Unit; • Outpatient postnatal and postpartum care in our Postnatal Ambulatory Clinic (PNAC); • Breastfeeding support in our breastfeeding clinic; and • Developmental follow-up for high-risk infants in our follow-up clinic. Our 13.7 full-time equivalent neonatologists work with a dedicated interprofessional team to provide quality care for the highest risk pregnancies and infants. We are also the only hospital in Canada that performs advanced procedures like laser and in-utero foetal surgery for pregnancies. Research is conducted by all neonatologists in the department, and supported by research staff from the Maternal-Infant Care Research Centre (MiCare), which was established as an in-house facility to support departmental research. Our department also provides education and clinical training for medical students, specialty residents and sub-specialty fellows, nurses, and respiratory therapists, as well as postgraduate research training for both basic and clinical sciences. Highlights of the Last 5 Years Over the last 5 years, we have significantly improved the ways in which we provide care, expanded our research efforts and outputs, and continued to deliver world-class education and training. Clinical We have made significant improvements to our clinical facilities and services, and reorganized the department to provide improved access, consistency of care, and continuity of services to our most vulnerable patients across the continuum of care. This includes adding 3 new NICU beds, increasing the number of neonatologists on staff by 3.7 FTE, implementing a fully electronic NICU ordering system in 2013, moving to a mixed acuity system of care provision in the NICU (Level 2 and 3 combined), bringing Level 1 services in-house, repatriating the developmental follow-up clinic from SickKids, establishing a postnatal ambulatory clinic, and introducing a functional cardiac echocardiography service. In addition to making these changes to services, we have reduced the annual departmental operating deficit from $1M to $0. One of our most notable achievements has been the establishment of the Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank in partnership with SickKids and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The milk bank provides donor milk to Level 2 and 3 NICUs right across Ontario. We have also improved the quality of the care we provide through the use of the Evidence-based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIQ) system, significantly improved quality of care indicators for the NICU, and worked with parents and staff to facilitate better patient- and family-centred care through our innovative Parent Partner Program and Family Integrated Care model. As we look to the future, we are currently preparing for the implementation of a fully electronic NICU information system and constructing a new single-room design NICU, both of which will come online in 2014 and will continue to evolve the care that we provide.
