10 | JULY 2015 nshoremag.com For us carnivores, a juicy steak is the most satisfying of meals. Whether it's sizzling on the grill in your own backyard or you're enjoying a steak at a restaurant—there are few things more divine than biting into your favorite cut of beef. And if it is one type of eatery that North Shore offers—besides fried clam shacks, of course— it is the steak house. Although the iconic Hilltop Steakhouse run by Frank Giuffrida is just a memory now, legions of new high-end steak houses have descended on the region—all with a modern twist. A novice when it comes to the nu- ances of fine dining, writer Calvin Hennick picks up his knife and fork and heads to no less than six steak houses—all adding their own flavor to the American classic eatery. And one thing is certain about all of these establish- ments: These chefs know their way around a great cut of beef. Mouthwatering New York strips, demure mignons, colossal porterhouses, Hennick cuts his way through one meal after another to discover his newfound appreciation of the classic steak dinner. Writer Jeanne O'Brien Coffey checks in with Nancy Batista- Caswell to find out what this young restaurateur is up to these days. With two new chefs at the helm of Newburyport's Ceia and Brine, Batista-Caswell sets her sights on the big city—heading to Boston to compete with the ranks of the city's finest. Writer Sarah Shemkus visits The Market on Lobster Cove in Gloucester, a seasonal restaurant serving up some of the best dishes sum- mer has to offer. Relying on locally grown produce, The Market's chefs Nico and Amelia Monday let the honest flavors of the farm take center stage. Both were trained at Chez Panisse under Alice Waters—a pioneer in the local food movement—and have become great chefs in their own right. We hope you enjoy this issue focused on the region's top restaurants and the talented, passionate chefs behind them. His writing has appeared in The Boston Globe, Run- ner's World, Esquire, and other publications.
