And that's what they both want.
"You have to have a consistent practice to have
a consistent game," end Ryan Russell said. "I can
say week to week, I feel like every game we've progressed. Cincinnati was definitely not a reflection of
our talent or our abilities. Indiana State, we got the
win but there were still major breakdowns against
a non-FBS opponent, so that's big. This past Saturday, you could definitely see we competed until the
very end. We gave it our all, and every game we've
gotten better and we just want to continue that
trend and become more consistent.
"Just to really go out there and show we're getting better every week is a big thing for us as players because we've been a part of those inconsistent
teams. The coaches, they're new, they haven't been
apart of that. But we know that sometimes we tend
to fall in a slump, so we need to prove to ourselves,
our opponents and to the fans
that this isn't the case this year."
This Week In Purdue History
Sept. 20, 1975 • Purdue suffers a rare home shutout at the
hands of No. 9 Notre Dame. The Boilermakers looked as if they
were going to take a fourth-quarter lead, driving down to the
Irish 4. But on first down the Boilermakers tried a halfback pass
by junior Scott Dierking. ND's Luther Bradley stepped in front of
the pass and raced 99 yards for the TD, giving the Irish a 10-0 advantage with 11:19 left. The stunned capacity crowd of 69,795 endured a late Irish score and a 17-0 defeat.
Sept. 22, 1984 • The Boilermakers dismantle Minnesota 34-10
in the first of 13 consecutive years they played against a Lou Holtzcoached team. The Boilermaker offense sputtered some early but
17 fourth-quarter points and a career day by junior running back
Ray Wallace was enough. Wallace's 158-yard effort on that warm
afternoon was the fifth-highest yardage total by a Boilermaker
back in the 1980s.
Sept. 20, 2003 • After wearing gold uniforms at home for just
more than a season, Coach Joe Tiller dresses his
team in its traditional home black jerseys and
the 25th-ranked Boilermakers respond with a
59-7 win over Arizona. Wildcats' coach, and former Purdue assistant, John Mackovic doesn't
take too kindly to the Boilermakers' 21 points
in the fourth quarter and says so to Tiller in
their brief post-game meeting. Mackovic was
relieved of his duties not long after the dust up.
