days later. The Boilers notched a 2-0 win over visiting IPFW (2-5) before battling to an exciting 4-3 overtime victory at Miami University on Sunday. Purdue (5-2-1) is undefeated on Fridays, having won all four of its weekend-opening matches but finally broke through on a Sunday match in come-from-behind fashion against the Redhawks. After falling behind three times in the match, Purdue answered each time with an equalizing goal, the last one coming in the 82nd minute to force overtime after Miami (3-4) had scored only a minute earlier. "We struggled in the first half, struggled to do what we wanted to do," Coach Rob Klatte said. "So in that second half, we put in a side with more grit that could put pressure on them." The halftime adjustments paid dividends as the Boilers got an equalizing goal in the 62nd minute from a Jordan Pawlik penalty kick. Senior Laura Olympic Sports player-of-the-Week: faye adelaja Entering the season, Coach Dave Shondell was unsure how Purdue was going to replace the loss of Kaisley Fisher at middle blocker after the sophomore was lost for the season with a torn ACL in the spring. Through the first three weeks of the 2013 season, Shondell no longer has any worries about that position. Redshirt freshman Faye Adelaja has come in and made her presence known in the first eight matches of her collegiate career, making incremental improvements every week. Those improvements reached a high point in Tampa at the USF Invitational. In three victories, Adelaja anchored a dominant defensive effort by the Boilermakers, contributing 19 blocks along the front line. She also added 12 kills. "We came in knowing that we may be a little inexperienced in one spot, middle blocker," Shondell said. "Faye might be our most consistent and best performer at this point in the season." Those performances didn't go unnoticed as Adelaja took home a pair of conference awards for her effort, being named Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week as well as Co-Defensive Player-ofthe-Week. Adelaja is quick to note that the awards recognize a team defensive effort. "It's not just me — the whole team has made a lot of progress and have worked together," Adelaja said. After redshirting in 2012, Adelaja believes that a season of practicing has had a big impact on her performance this fall. "It has been tough with all these experienced players in the program," Adelaja said. "That's why practice has been very influential for me. Last year helped a lot. "I was able to pick up a few things from our older players." — Brandan Alford GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 4  •  37
