"Once my number gets called, if I get called up to the 53-man roster, if not this year then next year, I'll be ready," Allen said earlier this season when he came to Purdue during the Falcons' bye week. "You've got to be ready, because you never know what could happen, maybe somebody goes down (with an inju- ry) or somebody isn't playing well that week. You've got to always be ready for your chance. In this league, you never know what's going to happen." Allen has plenty of reason to want to succeed. Aside from his past motivations — being told he was too short, wasn't physical enough or simply couldn't do it — he also is driven by another fact: According to Allen, he was the highest-drafted player who didn't make an NFL team out of training camp. "It always motivates me," said the 5-9, 187-pound Allen. "That's why I'm always up, always working, always ready to learn. It's a fun fact that I was the highest draft pick in 2014 to get cut, and I will always remember that through all my years of playing, through all the tough times. I'll always remember that I was that guy." Purdue's other two rookies have been slow starters, as well. Tampa Bay offensive tackle Kevin Pamphile, the No. 149 pick overall (in Round 5), has played only sparingly, appearing in five games, including a start. In Week 15, he began the game as the sixth offensive lineman, an eligible tight end, and played about a dozen snaps total, the most of his career. Defensive tackle Bruce Gaston, meanwhile, has bounced around the league in his first season. After be- ing an undrafted free agent, Gaston spent time in Ari- zona, New England, Miami, Arizona (again) and Green Bay. He was on the 53-man roster in Arizona for a couple weeks in his second stint with the Cardinals but wasn't active. And after Arizona dropped him down to the prac- tice squad, he was signed by the Packers. j
