Hudson: "Well, where we have to be better on third down is from third-and-three to third-and-five, that was just awful, and that's speed. That's when the ball is out fast. That's really where we're a heavier man and blitz, it's guy- on-guy. And then we're got to affect the quarterback more on third-and-long. But when you break the third downs down overall, third-and-seven-plus, we were doing better, but it's that DNA part that you better be fast and it's right now, got to make a play, those bang-bang plays on those third-and-mediums (are the challenge for us)." Gold and Black: Can players instinctually be faster by just knowing the assignment? Hudson: "Well, we knew what we were doing. We didn't have MAs (missed assignments) on that stuff. If they run a slant, you've got to drive on it and break it up, or you've got to beat a one-on-one block that alters the throw, stuff like that." Gold and Black: How many Big Ten-ready guys do you feel like you have right now? Hudson: "Big Ten-ready, I would say that we have a cou- ple guys. Now, I look at Big Ten-ready not just as what they look like on the hoof. Jake Replogle is Big Ten- ready. Those three linebackers right now are Big Ten- ready. And there's more guys (than a year ago)." Gold and Black: Where does nose tackle Ra'Zahn Howard fit? Does he need to be better? Hudson: "A lot better. He's got to get a lot better. You can't just make a flash play here or there. That position, the closer to the ball you get, the more consistent you have to be and dependable. And we'll need guys grading in the positive end in the overall grades, their production being in the plus and not in the minus." Gold and Black: He probably needs to be more con- sistent during the week because he sat out a lot of practices to be more consistent on Saturday. Hudson: "This isn't pro football. This is probably the most development game that there is and you've got to practice in some capacity to have success on Saturday. Now, you can go out there and play, but how successful are you going to be?" Gold and Black: The players who redshirted last season, do any stand out as guys who could help next year? Hudson: "(Will) Colmery's athletic ability and size is going to be a plus. Now, we've got to see how he handles really being in there all the time. "But Keiwan (Jones) has got natural bend.
