As we celebrate our 25th
year of publishing Gold and
Black Illustrated, we look back
at the memorable covers while
reflecting what was going on at
the time.
The first week of February means one thing in
the world of college football: National Signing Day.
And over the years, Gold and Black has devoted
many covers to the top prospects signed in each
class. In February 2001, highly rated signees Kyle
Orton, sporting a short haircut he never had while
he was on campus, and Kevin Noel were featured.
Orton went on to have a great career at Purdue,
while Noel struggled to make an impact at his po
-
sition, finishing his career with just 10 catches.
Several less-heralded members of the Class of
2001 did make a big impact for the program, in-
cluding Brent Grover, Brian Hickman, Bobby Iwu-
chukwu, Brandon Jones, Matt Turner, Brandon Vil-
larreal and Jerod Void, helping the Boilermakers to
four straight bowl wins.
