John regaled us with stories of grow- ing up during WWII, he spoke of his time in the Air Force, and recalled taking my grandmother Catherine to Ireland to visit her brothers in 1968—her first trip back to the "old country" since 1923. He also spoke fondly of summers spent at his cottage in Harwich on Hinckleys Pond. at got the whole family—26 cousins and their spouses and children—reminisc- ing about summers spent on beaches on both Cape Cod and the North Shore of Boston. ere were stories of Sweetwater Forest Campground, where my parents took me and my seven siblings to camp in a pop-up trailer or hunker down in a tiny knotty-pine cottage a stone's throw from the beach. ese childhood memories of swimming, collecting shells, and exploring the coast with my family are my most cherished. As adults, my cousins and I continue to spend summers together on the beaches of New England. is holiday weekend get- together (although it was 55 degrees and raining) reminded me that summer is upon us and it is time to connect with family and friends over barbecue grills and chilled Sancerre at the shoreline. In this issue, we celebrate all things excellent about summer in New England. Writer Alexandra Pecci takes us on a tour of the best camping spots along the coast, while Jeanne O'Brien Coffey brings us farther afield to "glamping" spots—campgrounds where the term roughing it simply does not exist. We visit nature at night and report on fun hikes and kayak trips under the stars. We also give details of staycations here on the North Shore—stellar B&Bs, inns, and hotels to get away right in our own backyards. We write about the annual Bluefin Blowout presented by Lyon-Waugh Auto Group—a fishing tournament held in Gloucester every year to raise money for Alzheimer's research. Other fun events we cover are the Whim Dinner Series at Smolak Farms and Chefs at Sea, an inaugural dinner series launched by Beauport Hospitality Group aboard the luxuriously appointed Beauport Cruiseliner. Our lineup of summer fun would not be complete without our 5th Annual Best of the North Shore (BONS) Celebration, which will be held on August 22, 2018, at historic Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, a property of e Trustees of Reservations—our non- profit of choice for the evening!
