Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of pub-
lishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look
back at memorable covers while reflect-
ing what was going on at the time.
Our first year of publishing reflected the re-
ality of war as the United States had begun Operation Des-
ert Storm. It hit close to home for the Boilermaker athletic
family. As the Feb. 1, 1991 cover indicated, men's track coach
Mike Poehlein's son Brian was deployed in Saudi Arabia at
the time. Brian returned safely, but it was a nervous time for
the Poehlein family as it was for the rest of the country.
Other Purdue sports news of the day didn't seem to mat-
ter as much. New Purdue football coach Jim Colletto earned
a commitment from highly recruited quarterback Matt Pike,
but the Huntington, Ind., native didn't quite live up to the
expectations as he left the program after just three seasons.
Also, Coach Gene Keady's team upset No. 22 Michigan
State, thanks to 16 points by freshman Linc Darner. The victo-
ry proved important to the Boilermakers' résumé, as Purdue
was able to make the NCAA Tournament with 17 wins, the lowest victory total by any Boilermaker team
to make the Big Dance.
