As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing
Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at the
memorable covers while reflecting on what was
going on at the time.
Purdue hasn't seen the likes of the toughness Chris
Kramer displayed on the basketball court before or since.
His collision with Michigan State's Drew Neitzel during the Boiler-
makers' 60-54 win over the Spartans was one of many during his career,
but the cover caption put into words that Kramer and his "Baby Boiler"
teammates were running roughshod over the league. Purdue, ranked
No. 19 at the time, beat the 10th-ranked Spartans to move into first
place in the conference just a few days after winning at No. 8 Wisconsin.
The Boilermakers couldn't quite hold that lead to secure the con-
ference crown for third-year coach Matt Painter as late road losses to
Indiana and Ohio State delivered the title to Wisconsin. Still, it was a ride that the four fresh-
men (Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson, E'Twaun Moore and Scott Martin) and the play of
Kramer and Keaton Grant that made that season unforgettable.
The Feb. 16, 2008 issue also included Coach Joe Tiller's last recruiting class as the
head man, as coach-in-waiting Danny Hope provided a last-minute assist in securing the
25-member group. Hope had been hired just a month earlier to be Tiller's replacement for
the 2009 season. Highlighting the class was Ralph Bolden and current NFL defensive line-
man Kawann Short.
