GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 24 • 3 Gold and Black Illustrated at 25 As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memo- rable covers while reflecting what was going on at the time. For every Purdue fan, the opportunity to claim "We're Number 1" is always the hope, if not dream. And it has hap- pened, as the Boilermakers were ranked No. 1 in women's hoops after claiming the Big Ten Tournament title after a hard-fought 80-76 win over Illinois. In Gold and Black's history, it is the only time a Boilermak- er team has been ranked tops in the land. Of course, Stephanie White, shown running off the RCA Dome court in Indy after scoring 31 points, helped the team live up the poll- sters' billing. A few weeks later, the Boilermakers were national cham- pions after their magical six-game run through the NCAA Tournament. For a period of eight straight years (1997-2004), Purdue either won the Big Ten regular-season title or the Big Ten Tournament in women's hoops. It was something we literally could count on. Also in the March 6, 1999 issue was a preview of the men's Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. The Boilermakers were a No. 7 seed, limping into the tournament after a 7-9 conference record. Despite being nationally ranked for the first 15 weeks of the season, Gene Keady's team was struggling. In the moments after Purdue was upended by No. 10-seed Michigan in the opening round of the tournament, there were some who wondered if the Boilermakers were going to make the NCAA. They did, and they flourished, upsetting Texas and Miami en route to a second-straight Sweet 16 appearance. — Alan Karpick "If Purdue hangs on they're 12-6 in the big ten. Strong case for painter as conference coach of year." WTHR columnist Bob Kravitz (@bkravitz) during Purdue's win over Illinois Saturday.
