GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 27 • 20 EDWARDS GETS USA HOOPS INVITE After a solid freshman season, Purdue forward Vince Edwards has been invited to try out for the 19-and-Under FIBA Team this summer. No formal announce- ment has come as of yet from USA Basketball but Edwards has publicly acknowledged the invite. "Thank you to USA bas- ketball for inviting me to Colorado this summer to try out for the U19 FIBA Team … unreal feeling right now," he wrote on Twitter. Edwards started 29-of- 34 games and averaged 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in his first season with the Boil- ermakers. He also led the team with 90 assists, a pro- gram record for a non-guard. According to the USA Basketball website, training camp is June 12-26 in the U.S. Olym- pic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The FIBA U19 World Championship will be June 27-July 5 in Crete, Greece. COACHING NEWS A few former Boilermakers or Boilermaker coaches are on the move in the coaching industry. S After being let go by Missis- sippi State after just three seasons, former Painter assistant coach Rick Ray was named the head coach at Southeast Missouri State. S After leading Florida South- ern to the Division II national title, former Purdue guard Linc Darner was named the head coach at Wis- consin-Green Bay. S Former Purdue guard Tarrance Crump is expected to be named an assistant coach at SIU-Edwardsville af- ter spending a few seasons in support roles on Cuonzo Martin's staffs at Tennessee and California. Former Purdue director of operations Kent Williams is expected to be hired on at Edwardsville, also, after being out of the profession this past season. S Former Purdue player Marcus Green is expected to replace Crump in the support role on Martin's staff at Cali - fornia. BIG TEN COMINGS AND GOINGS NBA decisions that'll im- pact the Big Ten next season: S Wisconsin lost forward Sam Dekker after his stand- out NCAA Tournament showing. S Nebraska leading scorer Terran Petteway and big man Wal- ter Pitchford each left school to try their hands at the professional ranks. S Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell will announce Saturday whether he's staying or going. Forward Troy Williams and guard James Black- mon Jr. are returning to IU. S Michigan guard Caris Le- Vert is also still deliberating his pro future after an injury-shortened ju- nior season, but he indicated dur- ing the year he'd likely return to Ann Arbor. S Maryland kept star soph- omore-to-be guard Melo Trimble and senior-to-be forward Jake Lay- man, making the Terps an odds-on favorite in the Big Ten next season, despite the loss of forward Dez Wells to graduation. S Ohio State wunderkind D'Angelo Russell has not an- nounced his plans yet, but it would be considered shocking if he were to return to the Buckeyes. He's in the mix to be the No. 1 pick. j Tom Campbell Forward Vince Edwards earned a tryout with the Team USA FIBA U19 team this summer.
