Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look
back at memorable covers while reflecting what was going on at the time.
During the Ross-Ade Stadium renovation earlier this century, Purdue's spring
game has taken to the road three times: Carmel in 2002, Fort Wayne 2003 and Mer-
rillville in 2004. Here is the cover of the May 9, 2003 issue, when Taylor Stubblefield
celebrates in the end zone during a game that was played
on a day that rivaled last Saturday for sunshine and warmth.
Stubblefield caught two
touchdown passes from junior
quarterback Kyle Orton to help the
Gold to a 27-6 win. The 2003 ver-
sion of spring drills was one filled
with injuries, as over 15 regulars
sat out all or part of practice. But it
didn't lower fans' expectations.
Following the Boilermakers'
Sun Bowl win over Washington
just a few months earlier in El Paso,
Texas, the offseason leading up to
the '03 campaign had high hopes.
The Boilermakers delivered in 2003
with a 9-4 record and a trip to the
Capital One Bowl.

HAMMONS ON THE BLOCK
With A.J. Hammons returning for his senior year, he can reserve a spot in the Big Ten record
books as one of the league's greatest shot blockers.
Here are some numbers to ponder:
89
Rebounds needed by
Hammons to surpass
Joe Barry Carroll as
the school's top shot blocker. He
has had 96 each of the last two
years.
3
Seasons in which Ham-
mons has led the Big Ten
in blocks. Only Penn State's
Calvin Booth (1996-99) led the
conference in blocked shots
four-straight years.
2
Players nationally to return
with 1,000 career points,
600 rebounds and 250
blocks: Hammons and Austin
Peay's Chris Horton.
