32 HIP HOP / RNB www.guestlist.net MANNY NORTE Issue 44 / 2012 DJ, presenter and music producer, well known across all of the mediums he graces - he really is the "name you can trust", and that is a title truly earned. We decided to catch up with this DJ legend and have a good old chin wag. Anaisay Taha Anaisay@guestlist.net So you're a DJ, producer and a radio presenter. involved in music? Funnily enough I started out dancing. I used to dance in college and in a dance crew. We used to do fashion shows and battle up crews, dancing all-round the world and in videos. Also at the same time, I had some cousins who were managing some groups back in the day, - UK soul group called 'Indisciples' and a rap outfit called 'Dos Heat Productions'. I always used to go to the office to find out what's going on, why they're doing this, who's calling up and why are they're going to these release parties. How did you initially get You're now a weekend DJ at Choice FM and before that you worked at BBC 1Xtra and Kiss as well. Tell me about your journey working for different radio stations. I'm probably the only DJ to have been on all the main stations to be honest. Before legal radio, I was doing pirate radio, and from there it was a natural progression. I saw the boss at the time at 1Xtra, and they signed me up and I was there for four and a bit years. After that I was at Kiss and now I'm at Choice. I guess there is a thing where people like my energy. They like what I'm playing and they like what I'm talking about. I loved this before I got paid for it and now that I'm getting paid it's a double bonus. Can you tell us about the Choice FM Reloaded party that's coming up? What it is, is across the station. does this thing on a Monday to Friday called Reloaded, which is a load of classic tunes, be that RnB, Hip Hop or whatever. We were getting a lot of traffic online - there were people tweeting how much they loved the songs that were being played. So [DJ] Jigs here at Choice, we thought: 'why not throw a Reloaded party?' So I'm alongside some of the Choice big DJ's and I think Damage are performing as well, big-up the Damage crew! That's at the Electric Brixton, and I'm DJ-ing there as well so I'm very much looking forward to it. When will the Reloaded party be taking place? On Saturday the 6th of October. So tell us about your new radio show at Choice FM. This new show I'm doing at choice is every won the relay, they won the gold and they broke the world record. Cool, so I'm the last DJ on set, and before you know it, Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Warren Weir - they all jump on the stage and grab the mic! By the time I got back to Choicethe next morning, it was all over the TV news and the paper. Twitter went crazy and I thought: "whoa I could get used to this!" You're going to be Misha B's DJ for Nicki Minaj's UK tour, have you worked with any of them before? I've interviewed Nicki Minaj before but I've not worked with her - I'd love to! It should like Rita Ora, and Jessie J who has jumped on the mic. relax. It's a good place to hang out and You're a former MOBO award winner. Would you say that's one of your biggest achievements to date? In terms of what I do as a DJ, I've been nominated for a few awards. Being the best club DJ in the UK is a great achievement. People respect me for what I'm doing. How did you become known as "the name you can trust"? *laughs* It's a slogan I thought of that has just "COOL SO I'M THE LAST DJ ON SET AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IS USAIN BOLT, WEIR, BLAKE, THEY ALL COME THROUGH THEY JUMP ON THE STAGE AND GRAB THE MIC!!" Saturday and Sunday morning, at breakfast- time. music banter! I bring in a couple of guests in, have a chat and just really enjoy it. I've already had Misha B in so I think in the next couple of weeks we're going to have a few more guests in. We're going to have fun with it. It's from 9am - 12pm and it's just like - You recently played at Brick Lanes Puma club and Usain Bolt joined you in the booth, how was that? It was crazy. You couldn't have paid for that moment - it was priceless. I mean the Olympics is every four years, the athletes weren't at the Puma Yard all week because they were competing, but I was booked before the Olympics had started - to DJ at the last event. I was hoping they were going to come through, but I wasn't sure if they'd [Team Jamaica's athletes] come. Then, they be exciting. So I'll be on tour with Misha B as her support DJ and we're doing the whole Nicki Minaj tour up and down the country. I'll also be doing some other shows with Misha B before the tour, so I'm looking forward to that also. What other artists, if you could choose any, would you love to go on tour with? Good question. Kanye West I'm loving the whole G.O.O.D. Music movement. I love a lot of people but I like what those guys are doing. Now tell us about your weekly night that you run - Different Strokes at Cherry Jam. Are you thinking about bringing back at a different venue? It's every Friday 15 Porchester Road, right next to Royal Oak station. It's a nice, intimate venue. A lot of artists have passed through, stuck with me. good. If you want someone to do justice at your party, you can hire me because trust me - I'll do it. It's sort of stuck with me and people say it all the time. I'd like to say that my word is Are you planning to release any more singles? Yeah I am. With the music production it's a matter of me knuckling down, staying at home and focusing on the music. I've got the Nicki Minaj and Misha B tour coming up, and I'll need some time to settle down and focus on some ideas and music. I'm lucky enough because I know a lot of the artists personally, but with music, it's a matter of timing and making sure it's right - I don't want to put out anything willy-nilly, unless it's a remix or something viral for online purposes. If you were invisible for a day what three things would you do? I'd like to sit inside Timbaland's studio and watch him vibe when he's knocking out those crazy drums. There is a new track he's just done with Missy Elliott. crazy and I would love to be in the studio just watching and learning how he does that. Secondly, maybe Stacey Dash's bathroom. *laughs* I'm being honest! If I was invisible I'd stay there for an hour and a half... damn it - the whole day. Thirdly, maybe I'd go to the White House and hang out with Barack. It's absolutely If you could fill a swimming pool with anything what would it be? Fifty-pound notes or apple crumble! Do you have any exclusive news for The Guestlist Network? I'm going to be working on some TV stuff. I've got some ideas for a programme that I want to get off the ground, like a sit-com. It's in the works, I've been writing something. A lot of people like me for my music, but a lot like me for what I might say that they find funny. So I'm working on that so hopefully next year. Catch him DJing with Misha B who is supporting the forthcoming Nicki Minaj tour. check out Dj manny norte at: www.mannynorte.com
