Issue 44 / 2012 HIP HOP / RNB 33 www.guestlist.net JAZZY JEFF @ JAZZ CAFE Hip-Hop royalty is to descend on the Jazz Café with a one-off night placed in the legendary hands of DJ Jazzy Jeff. Beginning as one half of the multi-platinum rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, real name Jeff Townes has accomplished more than most in his long career. Known as a pioneer of the turntable, Jazzy has amassed awards from the DMC Championships, to the Grammys and the American Music Awards, all "For Da Love of Da Game". After a sold-out show in the spring, the master DJ will bring the noise once again to the Jazz Café on 15th October, with his mix of hip-hop, funk and soul classics spiced up with incredible scratch routines. MISSY ELLIOTT It has been too long since we last heard the boisterous sound of Missy Elliot blasting from the radio, but the female phenomenon is creating a stir with a return to her solo career. Missy Elliott has been at the heart of Hip-Hop with successes such as 'Get Ur Freak On', 'Pass That Dutch' and 'Lose Control'. It was these fresh, futuristic sounds and surrealist videos which caught the attention of the world. She has also become known for her work with Timbaland in which she created hits for artists such as SWV, 702 and Total. She was, however, most notably known for her work with Aaliyah, who she remained friends with until Aaliyah's undue death in 2001. The multi-talented rapper also drew in crowds with her diversity, working with artists from across the music spectrum, including that very famous rendition of 'Lady Marmalade', which saw the collaboration of Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim and Mya. However, it was with her 2002 album Under Construction that she really made her mark within female rap. The album focused on an old school sound and included rap and funk samples, the most famous of which was Run DMC's 'Peter Piper', which featured in her single 'Work It'. It also became the biggest selling female rap album of the time. Now she has returned with Timbaland, tapping into the roots of her solo career with two new singles and an album. The Hip-Hop industry is pleased to hear the original sounds of Missy Elliott once again, though she emphasises that this sound has not changed, instead, it is proof that she and Timbaland "never left".
