Issue 43 / 2012 BLACK SUN EMPIRE EMERGE FROM THE SHADOWS DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP 37 www.guestlist.net GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS MELÉ The Dutch trio are onto their fifth LP, with plenty of collaborations to get excited about. Having exploded onto the drum & bass scene in the early 90s, the Utrecht-based group have a new LP out, entitled From The Shadows. They've experimented with new ideas following some intense touring, but this latest release is pure d&b, moving away from the dubstep sounds heard on previous records. They joked that "no one likes it [dubstep] anymore, haven't you heard?" but went on to say that they just felt like making d&b this time around, and what a result. The songs are heavy on the bass and there are some pretty awesome drops mixed in there for good measure. Speaking about the process behind the album, the band stated that the change was aided by their move to new a recording location: an old warehouse "filled with bands and other electronic artists". Having other musicians around to work with, as well as other recording groups to take inspiration from, has resulted in a deep d&b record with some killer individual tracks. Their bi- monthly event, Blackout, has allowed them to collaborate with numerous artists, such as Youthstar and Foreign Beggars, who started out as guests in Black Sun Empire's shows in places including Utrecht, Berlin and Amsterdam. Ultimately, these events have led to some sick tracks being laid down – check out 'Dawn of a Dark Day', featuring Foreign Beggars. ALBUM OF THE MONTH Allflaws- R Complex 7 It's a bit of a stretch to label this artist under one genre. At only 20 years old, he's al- ready established himself in the world of music production and DJing, even gaining recognition as one of Timeout Magazine's 'DJ Stars of 2012'. Annie Mac, Toddla T, Rustie, Brodinski, Sinden and Hudson Mohawke are all said to be huge fans of Melé - so what is he about? He's all about getting the party started. As a Dj, Melé is known for quick cuts between massive tunes, getting across his passion and energy in performances, making this dude such a raw artist that is a must see. As a producer, he draws his inspiration from all over the realm of dance and club music. From tune to tune you can expect a wild card. Techno, Minimal House, Trap, Dubstep, Electro and Hip Hop are all elements he utilizes to create his instant classics that always go down a crowd favourite. DJ FRESH TOUR SCHEDULE After a string of festival appearances this summer including Global Gathering and Ibiza Rocks, the second half of Fresh Live will begin this November. Nextlevelism features a plethora of collaborations with some of today's best artists including Liam Bailey, Rizzle Kicks and Juliette Lewis. Vocalist and producer Gabriel Curran has created a niche for himself in the UK underground electronic scene. His new EP R Complex, is a dark collection of synths and strings, with Curran's unique lyrical style flowing over the industrial drums. His Bristol peers Portishead and Massive Attack can be heard here, but he also channels 90's rave sound ala The Prodigy and The KLF on the title track. It would be hard to put Allflaws some early into a specific genre, it is easy, however to comment on his socially conscious lyrics about politics and mental illness- two things that seem to be the same in the mind of Curran. One can't help but Banksy listens to on the bus on his way home from a hard nights painting. R Complex is released on Derelict State Records 2nd October 2012. imagine this is what November 3 Manchester, Warehouse Project November 14 Birmingham, HMV Institute November 15 Portsmouth, Pyramid Centre November 16 Hatfield, Forum November 19 Exeter, Lemongrove November 20 Bristol, O2 Academy November 22 Liverpool, O2 Academy November 23 Preston, 53 Degrees ee
