2017 / ISSUE 103 21 FILM The film will detail the plight of migrants across the globe, from the Syrian migrants coming into Europe, to the Islamic communities escaping from persecution in Myanmar, all filmed in a video-diary- style documentary. Famed for his powerful neo-expressionist style that almost entirely focuses on turning works of art into important contemporary political statements, Ai Wei Wei has continue his artistic endeavours by compiling a fascinating moving image journal. It follows the trails of different groups of migrants making their own respectively treacherous journeys across unknown lands in order to find themselves a new place they can call home. The release date on Amazon has been set for October 17th so be prepared for a compelling watch! China's controversial artist Ai Wei Wei, known by the art community in London for his 100 million ceramic sunflower seeds that adorned the floor of Turbine Hall at the Tate Gallery, is close to releasing his self-directed documentary Human Flow. Setting up her own orphanage in Cambodia, Tara Winkler uncovered that most of the children she offered refuge to were not actually orphans, they had parents. The unfortunate truth is that the more money that floods in, the more these kind of institutions are open. Young adults raised in institutions are 40 times more likely to have a criminal record and "500 times more likely to take their own lives". To counter this Winkler now runs the Cambodian Children's Trust which focuses on family based care. It stops vulnerable families from being separated in the first place and if a child can't live with their biological family, they are put in foster care. As she fights a illness that time & medicine forgot. 20th October - Bad Day For the Cut Set in Belfast, Ireland, middle aged Donal lives on a farm with his beloved mother. When she is murdered in a apparent home invasion the farmer embarks on a bloody quest to avenge her death. 27th October - Thor: Ragnarok Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, Thor races against time to stop the all powerful Hela from destroying his world, Asgard. 17th November - Ingrid Goes West Following a series of unforeseen setbacks Ingrid Thorburn, a unhinged social media stalker escapes her life to befriend her Instagram obsession, a Los Angeles socialite. The relationship quickly turns from #BFF to #WTF, creating a savagely hilarious dark comedy. The film is about 23-year-old Patricia aka Patti cake$, a white female rapper from Jersey who is struggling to make money to help her dying grandma. But she also has to deal with her alcoholic and mean- spirited mother along with constant mockery from her peers. However, Patti has a dream. A dream to spit lyrics and become a professional rapper, and although it is an unconventional vision, she uses this as a form of escapism to push through the haters and be herself. Along with the support of her fellow rapper and best friend, Jheri, Patti forms a plan to get out of the hometown that is holding her back. It is great to see both an excellent female lead along with some counter-intuitive characters that go against the normal Hollywood grain. If there is anything to take home from watching this film, it's that you really can do whatever you want to do in life and you should never have to give up who you are, despite what others may say. Patti Cake$ is a story with heart, warmth, humour and above all a message to never give up! BRINGING RAP TO THE BIG SCREEN IN A WAY YOU WOULD NEVER EXPECT IT'S PATTI CAKE$!
