An obtrusive square column was removed to gel the open-concept layout. "The husband loves wine and wanted storage for his collection," recalls Hirsch. He sourced the vertical wine fridge, which the contractor recessed into the wall beneath the stairs. Hirsch sourced and spec'd the three gray oak–finish wine racks from Stact, providing stylish room-temperature storage on the same wall. vignettes A Moroccan-inspired cement backsplash adds a beautiful detail to the space. Custom-made cabinets by Italian company Scavolini and a prep sink outfit the kitchenette. The base cabinets sport a brownish-gray wood melamine finish, while the upper cabinets of frosted glass feature optional up- or downlighting. "The frost hides the details of the contents but still adds dimension," explains Hirsch. A beverage fridge accommodates drinks for the kids and accoutrements for cocktail making. Infusing the kitchenette with her signature high style, Hirsch found a Moroccan-inspired cement tile for the backsplash. Made by Popham and ordered via Ann Sacks, its colors were custom-selected to match the basement's palette of grey and soft pastels. "It's my favorite feature," notes the owner of the accent wall. Also high in style is the seating area, which consists of a white laminate–topped table designed by Jesús Gasca for Stua and four white molded-plastic Eames chairs with walnut dowel legs from Design Within Reach. This space is most frequently used for games. "The kids sit and play board games or Legos. It's very versatile," says the owner.
