68 Schley-Johnson has a great eye for design—she enjoys browsing yard sales and consignment shops and furnishing rooms with a predilection for color and warm textures. She orchestrated the vivacious formal living room with a navy velvet sectional from Article, leather wing chair from West Elm, and patterned wool rug from Anthropologie. The homeowner notes, "I've always been drawn to jewel tones, and the 1950s kidney- shaped coffee table is a vintage piece." Other vintage treasures include the mid-century modern dining set and side server—bought by Schley- Johnson at a yard sale for $50—which she partnered with a yellow rug by Angela Adams. Fernandes had to take into account these already decorated spaces in her approach. "I took my lead from what was there, mixing in mid-century and Victorian accents," she relates. For the revamped sitting room off the kitchen, Fer- nandes admits it was an awkward area, used previously as a playroom. She says, "The living and dining rooms A deep blue velvet sofa takes center stage in the living room. are far from the kitchen, so we wanted this to be a hang- out spot with lots of seating where the children can read and play while dinner is being made." Its resulting décor employs both old and new: a new occasional bird chair from Anthropologie with applied felt and embroidery, an existing cane chair, and a new coffee table from West Elm. The Chesterfield sofa is new yet classic. "It balances out the other eclectic, thrifty items," says Fernandes. Schley-Johnson worked her own magic with accesso- ries throughout. She executed the sitting room's gallery wall and outfitted its charming Mad Men–inspired bar cart with finds from Target and home goods store Field House in Beverly. Accents with a nod to nature, includ- ing the leather sofa's playful fox and cat throw pillows from Nordstrom, create an adventurous theme. The "Woods" wallcovering by Cole & Son in the powder room
