f r o m p u b l i s h e r a l a n ON THE COVER Rob Henry was named the starting quarterback on Aug. 18, and there is little doubt that his leadership skill and experience had much to do with getting the nod. No Purdue quarterback in school history has gone 1,000 days between starts as Henry will do, and how well the fifth-year senior performs will have much to do with how far the Boilermakers go in 2013. k a r p i c k All Systems Go You get the feeling that Darrell Hazell knows exactly where he is going? If you don't, you probably should. The look on this image is one of no-nonsense, steady, sure direction. That appears to be Hazell, and I have a sense some of this quiet confidence is rubbing off on his first Purdue football team. He has command of the room … I mean, the football field. The players feel it, his coaches feel it, even the fans that have attended practice all during camp have that sense of his take-charge style. He doesn't say much at practice, but when he does, he can communicate with an expression as much as with his voice. He can pierce you with his eyes, by not saying a word. There is little wasted motion with this guy. No, I am not predicting a Tiller-esque run in Year 1 for Hazell and Co. If wins are your lone measuring stick, then anywhere north of five would be considered a highly successful season. But wins can't be Hazell's lone barometer in Year 1. It goes deeper than that. It's all about setting the direction of Gold and Black Illustrated A publication of Boilers, Inc. 2605 Yeager Road, West Lafayette, IN 47906 765-237-5002 or 1-800-876-GOPU (4678) Fax: 765-497-2110/Twitter.com/GoldandBlackcom President/Publisher Alan Karpick 765-237-5078 AKarpick@GoldandBlack.com Twitter.com/AlanKarpick Editor Brian Neubert BNeubert@GoldandBlack.com P ublications Coordinator Kyle Charters KCharters@GoldandBlack.com Associate Editor Stacy Clardie SClardie@GoldandBlack.com P hotography/Cover Photo Tom Campbell Graphic Designer Gary A.
