This Week In Purdue History
April 15, 2002 • Purdue holds a Saturday scrimmage, with the big news being the move of sophomore
Jon Goldsberry from linebacker to fullback, a position he would play the remainder of his career. With Ross-Ade
Stadium under renovation, the Boilermakers later concluded the spring
with the spring game held in Carmel.
April 14, 2006 • Just past the midway point of spring practice, Coach
Joe Tiller's team was in full preparation for its first scrimmage. Much of
the focus of the scrimmage was on Curtis Painter. The sophomore quar-
terback had won the starting job at the midway point of the '05 season
and was working to hold off competition from redshirt freshman Joey
Elliot. Painter ultimately won the job and threw for nearly 4,000 yards.
April 14, 2011 • The announcement of the scrap-
ping of the new "Purdue Pete" mascot is greeted with
a sigh of relief by many Purdue fans. Five days earlier,
a new head was unveiled at the spring game, but it
was met with a backlash from the fan base. "Fan pas-
sion trumps prototype," athletic director Morgan Burke
said. The "old" Pete returned to the sidelines for the
2011 season.
Low-Scoring Affairs
Saturday's scrimmage produced just 19 total
points between the teams. That low total has been
common in recent years.
